Frosh Waterhouse sets fastest pin record

Freshman Nathan Waterhouse set a school record with a 7-second pin at 103 pounds that helped propel Kennedy past Cedar Falls, 37-31, Thursday night (Dec. 16) in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Kennedy.

Waterhouse said he didn’t think he would wrestle in the meet.

“I thought I had a forfeit,” he said. “It felt good that I won. It sorta surprised me.”

Waterhouse’s fall helped negate an 18-4 Cedar Falls lead to start the meet. The Cougars won seven of the 12 matches wrestled, including four of the last five. The difference in the meet was extra points. Key Kennedy wins included sixth-ranked Luke Kremer (135), who won by fall in 2:29. That pin tied the match, 25-25. Logan Kubovec (145) added a pin in 1:47 that secured Kennedy’s win. Third-ranked Ryan Sheldon (171) chalked up a major decision in the meet’s first bout.

Other Kennedy wins included JD Ruzicka (125), Ryan Rodriguez (140) and Shane Williams (152). Rodriguez’s win put Kennedy ahead to stay, 28-25.

“Some of our kids didn’t finish matches, which was disappointing,” Coach Brent Paulson said. “We talk about that a lot in practice.”

The team continues to move forward, though.

“Overall, it’s nice to get a dual meet win and move on,” Paulson said.
