Indians' rally trips Columbus

Marion rallied from a 33-pin deficit to beat Waterloo Columbus, 2177-2160, Tuesday in a girls bowling meet at Cedar Rapids Bowl.

Stephanie Loesel had high game and series for Marion with a 170-337.

Columbus held a 1451-1418 lead after the first round, but was outscored by the Indians 759-709 in the Baker round.

Oelwein holds on to beat Indians

Oelwein built a 44-pin lead in the first round and held on to beat Marion in a triangular girls’ bowling meet Dec. 14 at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Oelwein finished with 2247 points. Marion had 2202. DeWitt Central was third with 1953.

Indians fall at Western Dubuque

EPWORTH — Marion’s Taylor Lamm rolled a 204 high game and 385 series but the Indians fell to Western Dubuque, 2550-2177, Dec. 10 in a Wamac Conference match.

Stephanie Loesel was the only other Marion bowler to have a series that broke 300.

West Delaware used a balanced scoring attack with all five bowlers rolling series between 303 and 352 and downed Marion, 2517-2100, Dec. 3 at Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

Taylor Lamm led Marion with a 337 series.

Bowling is fastest-growing sport in Iowa

Too bad high school letter jackets are no longer in vogue.

Maybe then the newest group of prep letter winners would get more recognition.

Right now, high school bowling is mostly a sport followed by the bowlers themselves, their family members and few fans.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not popular.

“It is,” says Linn-Mar head boys coach Andy Diercks, “the fastest-growing high school and collegiate sport in the country.

“It’s had double-digit growth in terms of numbers in the past five or six years. And it just keeps growing.”
