Marion - Boys Tennis

Marion boys slam Independence in tennis

Caleb Scott, Jeremy Ellerby, Seth Tuetken, Peter Ward and Nate Meister won their singles matches Thursday as Marion bounced Independence, 8-1, in a Wamac Conference boys tennis meet at Marion.

Scott and Ellerby combined for an 11-9 victory at No.1 doubles.

Championship heartbreak for Marion

WATERLOO - The Marion boys doubles team of Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson lost a three-set heartbreaker to Davenport Assumption in the Class 1A championship finals match Saturday.

The Marion duo won the first set, but lost the next two, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(1).

Hornback and Larson reached the finals by beating top-seeded Keokuk in Saturday morning's semifinals, 6-3, 7-6(5).

The Davenport Assumption team was seeded No.2. Marion was not seeded in the top four.

Marion doubles team makes 1A semifinals

WATERLOO - Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson of Marion High School won two doubles matches Friday and have reached the semifinals of the Class 1A state tennis tournament at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Hornback and Anderson upset David Lapthorn and Jamison Roozeboom, the No.4 seed from Pella, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.

Hornback and Anderson defeated Tyler Fischer and Noah Welter of Atlantic, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round.

The tournament will continue on Saturday.

Marion duo advances to state tennis

DUBUQUE - Xavier parlayed a pair of third-place finishes into a Class 1A district tennis championship Friday at Wahlert High School.

Bill Young finished third in singles and the doubles team of Kyle D'Mello and Mitch Steffensmeier also placed third for the Saints.

The Marion doubles team of Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson finished second and qualified for the singles & doubles state tournament May 24-25 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. They are only the second Marion entry to qualify for the state tennis tournament. Eric Dalton qualified for singles in 1989.

Marion boys pin Oelwein netters, 8-1

Marion won all six singles matches and rolled past Oelwein, 8-1, Monday in boys tennis at Marion.

Marion's Brandon Hornback whipped Jacob Mohlis at No.1 singles, 10-2.

Michael Anderson blanked his opponent at No.2 singles.
