Thomas sets Mount Mercy volleyball record

Former Marion prep volleyball star Brittney Thomas set the Mount Mercy record for career kills during a match Oct. 1 at Roosevelt University in Illinois.

Thomas had 25 kills in 49 attempts in the match against Roosevelt. She has 1,290 kills, moving her past Mount Mercy Hall of Famer Amy Osenbaugh Brinkmeyer's former record of 1,283 that had stood for 18 years.

Thomas led Marion to the Class 3A state volleyball title in 2008 and was captain of the all-tournament team. She set the Mount Mercy record for kills in a season as a freshman in 2009 with 504.

Thomas played on a Midwest all-star team that toured Scotland last May.

Mount Mercy (14-8, 1-3 Midwest Collegiate Conference) hosts conference co-leader Grand View (19-5, 4-0) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hennessey Recreation Center.
