No. 1 Lions rout Hawks

No. 1 Linn-Mar used a balance attack and a strong inside presence Friday night to defeat Prairie, 66-36, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball game at Linn-Mar.

Josh Montague led all scorers with 15 points, Matt Bohannon and Ian McBrayer each scored 14, and Marcus Paige added 10 as the Lions (5-0, 3-0 MVC) took advantage of their size to control the paint.  Linn-Mar took control immediately, building a 32-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Coach James Moses: A big name with solid values

There is a rich tradition of successful sports at Cedar Rapids Prairie, and basketball is no exception. Athletic programs are cyclical by nature, and the cycle has not been kind to the Prairie Hawk basketball program in recent times.

In the past 10 years there have been a number of coaching changes, and in the last six years a number of players from the Prairie district opted to open-enroll in other area high school programs. But that is mere background music for the current situation at Prairie.

Former basketball coach and current Athletic Director Rocky Bennett spent last summer locating a big-name coach to turn the fortunes of Prairie basketball back to the up cycle. He selected James Moses, former star for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Moses carries Dr. Tom’s ideas to Prairie

None of the basketball players at Prairie were born when James Moses starred for the University of Iowa basketball team 20 years ago.

If they know about his tip-in that beat Indiana in overtime in 1991, it’s from history books or from watching Big Ten classics on TV.

They probably don’t know he was Iowa’s co-MVP in 1991 and that he’s the 14th-leading scorer in school history. But know this: Their new head coach is determined to lead Prairie out of the wilderness of boys’ basketball.
