Prairie Hawks pummelled by West, 63-21

IOWA CITY - James Moses has been around basketball most of his life. He has experienced both the highs and lows the game can bring.

The former Iowa Hawkeye standout spent the past four seasons as the head boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie, working to build a program from the ground up.

Last week, Moses announced he was stepping away from the job after the season to spend more time with his family.

There have been more lows than highs on the court during Moses’ tenure and in his final game, bad luck struck early.

Lorenz keys Prairie comeback

Prairie's Mitch Lorenz admitted he didn't do much for most of the game Monday night against Marshalltown except make four fouls and miss his first four shots.

With his team on the ropes, though, he came to and came through.

In the last four minutes, the junior forward canned one 3-pointer to put the Hawks ahead, hit another to extend the lead to five, pulled down three crucial rebounds and sank two free throws to ice a 70-59 Prairie win that was much closer than the score indicated.

“I'd call it redemption, for sure,” Lorenz said of his fast finish following a slow start in the Class 4A substate opening round game at Prairie.

Mims scores 26 in Prairie loss

WATERLOO - Michael Mims scored 26 points in a losing effort as Prairie fell to Waterloo East, 70-65, Friday night in MVC boys basketball.

Mitch Lorenz added 14 points for Prairie (5-16, 3-13).

Moses stepping down at Prairie

After four seasons, James Moses is stepping down as the head boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie effective at the conclusion of the season.

The announcement was made Wednesday night.

"Coach Moses is very passionate about the game of basketball," said Activities Director Rocky Bennett. "He was committed to helping our boys improve at all levels as players and, more importantly, as young men. He is such a quality person and we are appreciative of his dedicated service to Prairie."

Olson nets 24 as Jeff rips Prairie

Jacob Olson poured in 24 points Tuesday night as Jefferson bopped Prairie, 63-39, in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game at Prairie.

Michael Mims scored 14 points for Prairie (5-15, 3-12).

Jefferson raised its records to 6-14 overall and 4-12 in the league.
