Prairie drops a pair of girls soccer games

The Xavier girls soccer team continued their offensive dominance on a rainy Saturday at Prairie, picking up a 6-2 victory over the Hawks.

The Saints (13-1, 10-1 MVC) six goals against Prairie (4-10, 4-7) brings their total to 36 goals in the last five games, since they had their 35-game winning streak broken by Washington on April 30. Before that game, Xavier had scored 17 goals through their first seven games.

“Offensively we are playing well,” said Xavier Coach Doug Graham. “We are kind of hitting our stride at the end of the season. The two girls up top, Kayla (Armstrong) and Annie (Dale) are connecting really well, and then you’ve got Lauren Konchar coming in. Now the three of them are all looking for each other so that is helping us out a lot.”

Those three accounted for five of the six goals with Armstrong and Konchar both scoring two goals. Senior Kelsey Sargent netted the other goal for the Saints. Armstrong boosted her Metro-leading goal total to 20.

The game was played in less than ideal conditions with constant rain through the first 50 minutes of the game. Xavier was able to take advantage of that a couple of times to help it build up an early lead.

“The ball was king of skidding through a little bit and the Prairie goal keeper was playing very deep out,” Graham said. “That gave us an opportunity to rocket the slot balls through, but it always skips a lot in this weather.”

Although the Prairie side was a little outmatched on Saturday, they were able to take advantage of their chances to keep the game interesting through the first 70 minutes.

Junior forward Rachel Carney was able to keep the Xavier defense honest, providing a speedy weapon up top that gave Xavier some trouble on long passes. Carney scored the first goal for Prairie off of a nice feed from Meleah Baloch to cut Xavier lead to 3-1.

Prairie connected again in the second half when Katherine Grabe took a good corner kick from Elissa Musil and barely slotted it inside the post to cut the lead to two goals again.

But the Saints were too much for the Hawks, scoring a pair of goals down the stretch to put the game away.

Prairie dropped its second game of the day, 2-0, to Linn-Mar.
