Prairie - Wrestling

Witte repeats as state champ; Walters, Kremer 2nd

DES MOINES - Prairie senior Zach Witte was a bloody mess after winning the 152-pound title at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament Saturday night.

Bloody forehead, bloody nose and bloody proud.

Witte became the sixth multiple state champion in school history when he defeated Dylan Blackford of Southeast Polk, 5-3, before a packed house at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Witte captured the 145-pound title last year and did not lose a single match as a junior or senior.

"I had a goal all year and last year. I accomplished it, so it feels really good," he said.

Witte (23-0) began the championship match with white tape around his head, covering a gash on his forehead, but the blood seeped through several times and trainers had to make hasty repairs.

He also suffered a bloody nose during the match, requiring more repairs, and there were red splotches all over his chiseled body after the match ended.

"That's the way it's supposed to be, right?" he said with a big, happy smile.

Witte's victory clinched fifth place in the team standings for Prairie, giving the Hawks a slight edge over West Des Moines Valley in the final tally.

Prairie sophomore Chris Walters was defeated by Tyler Willers of Pleasant Valley, 3-1, in the championship match at 120 pounds. Walters finished the campaign at 40-4. Willers (51-2) won the 103-pound title in 2010 as a sophomore and finished his career with two state crowns.

Kennedy senior Luke Kremer was trimmed by Dakota Bauer of Iowa City West, 6-4, in the finals at 132 pounds. Kremer (39-6) placed sixth at the state meet as a sophomore, finished third last year and placed a notch higher this time around.

Witte joined Barry Davis, Dan Dubishar, Matt Hatcher, Dan Osborn and Jim Zalesky as Prairie wrestlers with multiple state titles. Davis won three crowns in 1978-79-80 while all the others finished their careers with two titles.

Witte place second at the state meet as a freshman in 2009, but failed to qualify as a sophomore. That proved to be a turning point in his career.

"That definitely motivated me," he said. "I was not happy. I don't think anyone would be happy after that. I made my goal not to let that ever happen again."

Prairie Coach Blake Williams said Witte returned to the wrestling room as a junior with great determination.

"He wanted to remember that feeling. And he did," said Williams. "And from last year (after winning the state title), I said 'Now remember THAT feeling.' He remembers both of those."

Williams thought Witte's considerable state tournament experience was a pivotal factor Saturday night. Blackford placed fourth as a freshman in 2010, but could not match Witte's track record.

Witte trailed, 1-0, after two periods, but kept his cool, kept wrestling and got two takedowns in the third period.

"Zach didn't panic, he didn't come out of his game plan or anything," said Williams. "He stayed in position and did what he does best.

"The great thing about Zach, being in that situation (the state finals) two times before, he was so relaxed and so loose. He knew exactly what he needed to do and he went out and did it.

"It's great, a great way to go out for him," said Williams.

Witte missed the first six weeks of the season with a broken bone near his left wrist, thanks to a mishap during the football season, but returned in January and began his quest for another title.

Witte, who will wrestle at Northern Iowa next year, was a happy guy Saturday night. He was also a hungry guy after maintaining his weight all season.

"I'm going to have a steak and potatoes," he said. "And a nice dessert."

Jeffery takes 3rd again for Lions

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar sophomore Alijah Jeffery knows his way to third place on the victory stand at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament.

He's been there twice now in two years.

Jeffery placed third at the state tournament last season at 103 pounds as a freshman and climbed to the third step on the victory stand again Saturday at 113 pounds.

Jeffery topped Josh Wenger of Cedar Rapids Prairie, 5-3, in the wrestle-backs Saturday morning to claim the bronze medal and finish the season with a 45-6 record.

"It was a decent year, not quite what I wanted," he said. "I wanted to win, but I'll come back next year stronger than ever."

Wenger finished his freshman campaign at Prairie with a 45-6 record and a fourth-place showing at state.

Linn-Mar entered Saturday in fourth place in the standings, just 1.5 points behind Iowa City West, but Jeffery's victory helped the Lions jump over the Trojans by 3.5 points heading into the championship round Saturday night.

Linn-Mar led Iowa City West, 122 to 118.5, after the consolation matches for 3rd, 5th and 7th place. Both teams had three wrestlers in the finals, so it was still up for grabs entering the final round of the three-day event.

"A third-place finish would be pretty good, because Iowa City West is a tough team," said Jeffery. "It would be good to be over them."

Iowa City West defeated Linn-Mar for the Mississippi Valley Conference title this season, so the Lions were looking for revenge at Wells Fargo Arena.

"It's been on our minds since the beginning of the tournament," said Linn-Mar senior Mitch Wantock, who won his final match Saturday and finished fifth at 170 pounds. "We thought it would be great to come out with a third-place trophy, at least."

Bettendorf entered the final round with 166 points, followed by Southeast Polk (142.5), Linn-Mar (122), Iowa City West (118.5), West Des Moines Valley (84), Prairie (82.5), Waverly-Shell Rock (70), Mason City (66), Pleasant Valley (66) and Lewis Central (60).

Wantock helped Linn-Mar -- and hurt the Prairie Hawks -- when he defeated Prairie junior Cameron Rathje in the consolation match for fifth place, 11-6. Wantock got a late start this season after breaking his ankle in a football game in late October, but he returned and posted a 27-4 mark in his final campaign.

"I wish I could have done better," said Wantock, who placed sixth last season at 171 pounds. "At least I did better than last year."

Linn-Mar junior Joel Northrup (44-7) lost his final match to Kyle Larson of West Des Moines Valley, 7-3, to finish in fourth place at 132 pounds. He placed third at state as a freshman in 2010 at 103 pounds.

Linn-Mar senior A.J. Garcia (41-12) was pinned by Joe Scanlon of Johnston in 1:33 Saturday morning and finished fourth at 220 pounds.

Prairie junior Andrew Netolicky (41-8) pinned Jake Melik of Pleasant Valley in 5:24 to claim fifth place at 220 pounds. Netolicky finished sixth last year at 189.

Washington senior Tyler Burrell (39-4) trimmed Shaquille Wells of Urbandale, 2-1, to capture fifth place at 285 pounds. Burrell placed sixth last year at 285.

Prairie sophomore Trey Blaha (35-8) was pinned by John Christopherson of Spencer at 6:23 in overtime to finish sixth at 126 pounds.

Linn-Mar sophomore Damon Griffin (41-11) lost to Andrew Steiert of Waverly-Shell Rock, 4-0, and finished eighth at 120 pounds.

6 Metro wrestlers going for the gold

DES MOINES - They've lived in hotel rooms since Tuesday night and have spent a major chunk of time at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines, hoping and praying for a chance to wrestle for a state title before a huge crowd on Saturday night.

The time is here.

Six wrestlers from the Cedar Rapids Metro area will be in the spotlight Saturday night when they battle for individual titles at the 92nd annual state tournament.

Matt Wempen of Linn-Mar, Chris Walters of Cedar Rapids Prairie, Luke Kremer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Ross Lembeck of Linn-Mar, Zach Witte of Prairie and Mark Atwater of Linn-Mar have all reached the pinnacle of prep wrestling in Iowa.

One more match, one more victory and they'll climb to the top of the victory stand, something they've cherished since they were peewee wrestlers in grade school.

"It's a great feeling, a great crowd, our team is doing well. I can't ask for much more right now," said Atwater, the Linn-Mar football star who has proven he's an excellent wrestler as well. "I'd like to cap off my senior season with a state championship. It's something I've always dreamed of."

Linn-Mar is sitting in fourth place in the team standings heading into the final day with 101 points, just 1.5 markers behind Iowa City West in a tight battle for third. The Lions and Trojans both have three wrestlers in the finals, so it's up for grabs.

"We have to score more points," said Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher, putting it succinctly.

The Prairie Hawks are in fifth place in the standings and have a good chance to stay there, with two grapplers in the finals and an 11.5 point lead over Waverly-Shell Rock. One of those finalists is Witte, who will be bidding to become a two-time champion when he battles for the 152-pound crown.

Bettendorf and Southeast Polk are scrapping for the team championship, probably too far ahead and too powerful for anyone else to catch them on Saturday.

Witte claimed the 145-pound title last season and is looking to end his career with another trip to the top. He didn't get much sleep before the finals last year and anticipated another restless night in Des Moines Friday night.

"You're thinking a lot. I'll try to sleep good, but I doubt I will," he said.

Witte was sporting a minor shiner under his right eye and all sorts of cuts and bruises on his forehead. "I'm looking pretty cool," he said, smiling, proud of his battle scars.

The championship round is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday with the Grand March and the finals in Class 3A, 2A and 1A. The finals will be televised in eastern Iowa by KCRG 9.2 (Mediacom 109, Imon 709).

The fun will start right away with Wempen (47-2) facing Travis Willers of Pleasant Valley (50-2) for top honors at 106 pounds, the lightest weight class in the tournament.

Walters (40-3) will meet Tyler Willers of Pleasant Valley (50-2) for the championship at 120 pounds. Kremer (39-5) has a formidable date with Dakota Bauer of Iowa City West (51-2) for bragging rights at 132 pounds.

Lembeck (48-2) faces undefeated Gabriel Moreno of Urbandale (40-0) for the 145-pound crown, then Witte (22-0) will meet Dylan Blackford of Southeast Polk (44-3) for bragging rights at 152 pounds.

Atwater (31-3) will finish the Metro parade onto center stage when he tangles with undefeated Jared Bartel of Mason City (48-0) for honors at 182 pounds. There are 14 weight classes, and Metro wrestlers will be competing in six of them.

Kremer finished sixth in the state tournament in 2010 as a sophomore and placed third last year. He's clinched no worse than second place this season, but he won't be happy with that. "No, not at this point," he remarked.

Kremer trimmed Joel Northrup of Linn-Mar in the semifinals, 4-2, in overtime in an all-Metro battle that squared their season series at two wins apiece.

"Two great kids battling out there," noted Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson. "It's what the sport is all about."

Ten other Metro wrestlers will be competing in the wrestle-backs on Saturday, including nine grapplers who could finish as high as third place with two more victories.

The potential third-place finishers are Alijah Jeffery of Linn-Mar (113), Josh Wenger of Prairie (113), Trey Blaha of Prairie (126), Northrup of Linn-Mar (132), Cameron Rathje of Prairie (170), Mitch Wantock of Linn-Mar (170), A.J. Garcia of Linn-Mar (220), Andrew Netolicky of Prairie (220) and Tyler Burrell of Washington (285). Damon Griffin of Linn-Mar (120) will be wrestling for seventh place.

Gould hindered by shoulder injury at state wrestling

DES MOINES - Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Austin Gould wrestled in significant pain at the Class 3A state tournament in Des Moines this week, a harness keeping his right shoulder in place and a constant grimace on his face.

He hurt his shoulder three weeks ago during a dual meet against Waterloo West. He extended his right arm while making a move that night and something went wrong.

"I felt something pop," he recalled Friday after wrestling his third and final match at the state tournament.

"They think it's a torn labrum. They told me I probably shouldn't be wrestling, but they left it up to me. So I did the best I could with it."

Gould wrestled in the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament and in the Class 3A district tournament with the bad shoulder. He qualified for the state meet and decided to keep going, even though he was wrestling with one arm for the most part.

Gould got pinned in the first round Thursday in 1 minute and 29 seconds, something that probably wouldn't have happened had he been at full strength. He rallied for a 14-2 victory in his first wrestle-back on Thursday, but was pinned again Friday morning in 3:59 and eliminated at Wells Fargo Arena.

He began the state tournament ranked 10th with a 38-5 record at 182 pounds, but compiled a 1-2 record in Des Moines and will not place in the top-8.

"It was unfortunate," said Prairie Coach Blake Williams, who admired Gould's attitude and toughness. "The last few weeks, his shoulder has been very, very sore. He gutted it out as best he could these last couple of weeks.

"You feel bad for the kid, because I think he had higher goals than just getting down here. But the good thing is, he has another year."

Gould was hoping to fare well in the state tournament for himself and his team. The Hawks are competing for a top-5 spot in the standings and would have gotten a big boost from Gould if healthy.

"It sucked. I don't know what to say," he remarked after being ousted from the tournament. "You work so hard to control your mind, and your body tells you something different."

Nobody would have blamed Gould if he had stopped wrestling several weeks ago. He thinks he'll need an operation to repair the possibly torn labrum, an injury that sidelines baseball players for an extended period of time.

"I worked so hard I didn't want to give up," he said. "I tried wrestling mostly left-handed. Everyone's hurt. If you wait until you're 100 percent, you're not going to wrestle."

Gould competed at half-speed in Des Moines, which wasn't good enough in a state tournament.

"I know he won't use that as an excuse. He'll take this experience and get better," said Williams. "He wasn't going to let that hold him back. He did the best he could."

Prairie stood in fifth place in the team standings with 47 points heading into the semifinals Friday afternoon. The Hawks went 5-for-5 in the winner's bracket Friday morning and sent Josh Wenger (113), Chris Walters (120), Trey Blaha (126), Zach Witte (152) and Cameron Rathje (170) into the semifinals. The Hawks also have Andrew Netolicky (220) alive in the consolation bracket.

The Linn-Mar Lions were in third place in the team standings with 65 points heading into the semifinals. The Lions went 6-for-8 in the winner's bracket and sent Matt Wempen (106), Alijah Jeffery (113), Joel Northrup (132), Ross Lembeck (145), Mitch Wantock (170) and Mark Atwater (182) into the semifinals. They also have Damon Griffin (120) and A.J. Garcia (220) alive in the consolation bracket.

Luke Kremer of Kennedy won his quarterfinal match at 132 pounds Friday morning and had a date with Linn-Mar's Northrup in the semifinals Friday afternoon.

Washington heavyweight Tyler Burrell won his wrestle-back Friday morning and was still vying for high honors after losing in the first round on Thursday.

Jack Boland of Xavier lost twice at 195 pounds Friday morning and was eliminated. Trevor Berry of Linn-Mar, Ryan Rodriguez of Kennedy and Kaisar Herz of Washington were eliminated Friday morning and will not place in the tournament.

Bettendorf led the team standings heading into the semifinals with 78 points, followed by Southeast Polk (69.5), Linn-Mar (65), Iowa City West (60.5), Prairie (47), Waverly-Shell Rock (46.5), West Des Moines Valley (45), Pleasant Valley (37), Urbandale (33) and Mason City (31).

Bettendorf advanced 10 wrestlers to Friday afternoon's session, including five in the winner's bracket. Southeast Polk advanced seven wrestlers, with all of them in the winner's bracket. Linn-Mar advanced eight wrestlers, with six in the winner's bracket. Iowa City West advanced seven wrestlers, with four in the winner's bracket.

The tournament will end Saturday night with the championship matches.

Linn-Mar wrestlers enjoy strong start at state

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher cracked a quick smile after all nine of his wrestlers advanced on the first day of the Class 3A state tournament Thursday.

Then he did an about-face and quickly retreated behind a cautious exterior.

"One match at a time," he said warily at noisy Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. "There's a lot of wrestling yet to do. We're not where we want to be yet."

Bettendorf set the pace on Day 1 of the tournament with 34 points and advanced 10 wrestlers, but Linn-Mar was nipping at the Bulldogs in second place. Linn-Mar collected 27 points and advanced eight men to the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held Friday, with the finals on Saturday night.

"Anything is possible," said Streicher. "One round down. The big rounds are coming up tomorrow. We're looking pretty good."

West Des Moines Valley stands in third place with 26 points, followed by Iowa City West (24.5), Southeast Polk (24.5) and Waverly-Shell Rock (21).

The Prairie Hawks are in seventh place with 17 points, but two of their wrestlers were eliminated Thursday and two other big guns - Austin Gould and Andrew Netolicky - fell into the losers bracket.

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Tyler Burrell, ranked No. 1 at 285 pounds, lost his first-round match in overtime and hopes to wrestle back for third place.

Matt Wempen (106), Alijah Jeffery (113), Damon Griffin (120), Joel Northrup (132), Ross Lembeck (138), Mitch Wantock (170), Mark Atwater (182) and A.J. Garcia (220) won their first-round matches for Linn-Mar Thursday. Trevor Berry lost his opener at 126 pounds, but won his first wrestle-back as the Lions advanced their entire contingent to the second day.

"We're pushing," said Atwater, who pinned his opponent in 5:16. "We're looking for a trophy."

Bettendorf and West Des Moines Valley advanced 10 wrestlers to the second day of the tournament. Linn-Mar and Iowa City West are next with nine-man teams on Day 2.

Bettendorf has nine grapplers in the winners bracket. Linn-Mar is second in that category with eight.

Streicher was happy with his team's performance, but not ready to celebrate.

"We have good wrestlers and a good team and we've got good spots in the bracket," he said. "Doing what you're supposed to do doesn't really excite me. Tomorrow is a huge day."

Atwater enjoyed his first trip to the state tournament after three near-misses as a freshman, sophomore and junior.

"It's what I thought it would be like," he said. "It's fun. A good crowd. I'm sure as the week continues it will get more and more special.

"My goal has been to get on the (medal) stand, not just make it," he said. "I went out there and took care of business the first round. That's all I can do on the first day."

Zach Witte of Cedar Rapids Prairie, seeking his second straight state title, got off to a somewhat shaky start with a 9-6 victory in the first round and was not happy with his performance.

"I was nervous," he said. "I didn't wrestle the match I'm used to wrestling. I have some mental problems to clear up before my next match.

"I'm just nervous," Witte said after winning his 60th match in a row. "All year I've been waiting for this."

Josh Wenger (113), Chris Walters (120), Trey Blaha (126), Witte (152) and Cameron Rathje (170) advanced to the quarterfinals for Prairie. Netolicky had a tough draw and lost to top-ranked Willie Miklus of Southeast Polk in the first round at 220 and Gould was pinned by a wrestler from Keokuk at 182 pounds. Peyton Wagner (145) and Casey Becker (160) lost two straight matches and were eliminated for the Hawks.

Burrell began the tournament with a 36-2 record and the No. 1 ranking at 285 pounds for Washington, but he lost to Nick Terpstra of Cedar Falls in overtime.

"He's pretty good, and it's hard to beat somebody three times," said Burrell, who beat Terpstra at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament and in a dual meet. "He works his ass off and I work mine off. He came out on top."

Burrell was hoping to join his brother, Brandon, as state heavyweight champions. Brandon Burrell won his 285-pound title in 2009 and was in the stands Thursday.

"It hurts a little bit, but not too much," said Burrell. "I just have to work my way back for third."

Luke Kremer (132) and Ryan Rodriguez (138) won their opening-round matches for the Kennedy Cougars, who are in 30th place with five points.

Jack Boland (185) won his opener for the Xavier Saints and advanced to Friday's second round.
