Prairie - Wrestling

Linn-Mar, Prairie scramble at state duals

DES MOINES - There must be a better way.

That's what the coaches and athletes were saying Wednesday at the 2012 state dual meet wrestling tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines.

There must be a better way. A better time. A better format.

The state duals are supposed to be a showcase for the top teams in Iowa. In a way they are, but not the way they were intended and not the way they're supposed to be.

The Linn-Mar Lions, who are ranked sixth in the state, completely tanked their match against West Des Moines Valley in the quarterfinals and nobody could blame them. Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher did not use any of his top guys, preferring to save them for the individual state tournament that begins Thursday.

West Des Moines Valley used six of its 10 individual state qualifiers and squashed the Lions, 57-12, because Streicher rested all nine of his state qualifiers.

Coaches had to pick their poison this week. They could wrestle their top people in the dual meet tournament on Wednesday and possibly weaken their chances in the indvidual state tournament, or they could save their top guys for the individual state tournament and risk getting walloped in the dual meet event.

Streicher, a successful coach, preferred to keep his guns loaded for the individual state tournament that will be held here Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Linn-Mar has several wrestlers who are capable of competing for individual state titles and the Lions could make a run for the team championship if things fall into place.

"We won't know until Saturday night whether it works or not," Streicher said after keeping Matt Wempen, Alijah Jeffery, Damon Griffin, Trevor Berry, Joel Northrup, Ross Lembeck, Mitch Wantock, Mark Atwater and A.J. Garcia on the bench.

"The closer it got to match time, the more I wanted to put guys out there, but I had to stick to what I thought was right for the kids," he said. "Obviously the competitive spirit in you wants to go out on the mat and you want to win every match you can. But we stuck with what we thought was right for our kids for tomorrow.

"Saturday night we'll know and we'll see if it turned out the way I thought it would. It is what it is. We made our decision and we'll live with it."

Cedar Rapids Prairie Coach Blake Williams, another successful coach, hedged his bets on Wednesday, using five of his top wrestlers in the quarterfinals against Iowa City West, but resting four others. The match was tied, 29-29, after 12 bouts, but Iowa City West put two of its studs on the mat for the last two bouts and won 40-29.

Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland used eight of his nine state qualifiers against Prairie, then used only three of them in the semifinals against Bettendorf and lost.

Prairie used five of its nine state qualifiers in the consolation semifinals against Ankeny and lost that meet, 44-28. Ankeny used all six of its state qualifiers against the Hawks.

Zach Witte, a defending state champion, wrestled in the first two meets for Prairie, but he was the only one of Prairie's state qualifiers to face Iowa City West and Ankeny. It was a case of mix-and-match, using a few state qualifiers, a few varsity wrestlers who did not qualify for the individual state tournament and a few junior varsity grapplers to fill out the lineup.

"It's just unfortunate," said Williams. "It puts coaches in a tough spot. We've gone back and forth all week about what would be the best way to do it.

"You've got to look at the kids that are going to be fighting their butt off the next three days. We kind of put that first and foremost in that meet (against Iowa City West). We shouldn't be in this situation."

For Prairie, it boiled down to giving their state qualifiers at least one match Wednesday to get some exercise, but not too much to detract from the rest of the week. Witte originally said he planned to wrestle only once, then took the mat again.

"I'm going to do whatever my coach tells me to," said Witte, who won his bouts against Iowa City West and Ankeny. "I wanted to have one match at least to get back in the rhythm. It's different wrestling in here than other places, so I wanted to wrestle at least once."

The state dual tournament was held in Cedar Rapids last year, a week after the individual state tournament was held in Des Moines. The IHSAA changed things this year, partially because the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids is being remodeled and not available, and partially because they wanted to bring both state tournaments to Des Moines and hold them consecutively for four straight days.

"I don't know if that was a good decision," said Witte, who will wrestle at the University of Northern Iowa next year. "I wish it (the state duals) would have been after state or a week before the state tournament. That way we could actually wrestle a full team.

"I wish we could have wrestled varsity-varsity completely," he said. "It would have been a different dual meet."

Iowa City West's Reiland indicated before the meet that he'd use his top wrestlers in the dual meet tournament, so Williams was not surprised when eight of them took the mat against his team.

"We had a pretty good idea they were going to wrestle their big guns," he said. "We just had to do what we thought was best for us and not worry about anything.

"It's kind of hard to see and know the outcome could have been different," he said. "Risk-reward is kind of what you're looking at, and I think we did what we needed to do."

Linn-Mar and top-ranked Southeast Polk met in the consolation semifinals Wednesday afternoon and both coaches rested all of their individual state qualifiers. Linn-Mar proved to be the deeper team and grabbed a 45-28 victory.

Linn-Mar lost to Ankeny, 50-16, in the consolation match for fifth place. The Lions finished with a 30-7 record in dual meets this season and placed sixth at state.

Prairie (28-8) won its last six bouts with Southeast Polk and nipped the Rams, 32-31, for seventh place on a major decision by Jamie Day in the final match. Southeast Polk began the state tournament with a 23-0 record and lost all three dual meets in Des Moines.

Linn-Mar and Prairie did not use any of their individual state qualifiers in their consolation meets Wednesday night.

Witte hopes to join Metro wrestling history

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Zach Witte will be trying to become the 16th multiple state wrestling champion in Metro history this week.

Witte won the Class 3A 145-pound title last year as a junior and will be seeking the 152-pound crown when the IHSAA state tournament is held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.

Witte compiled a 38-0 record last season and is 19-0 this year after getting a late start due to injury. He'll put his 57-match winning streak on the line Thursday morning when he faces Drake Chase of Bettendorf in the opening round.

There have been 15 multiple state champions from the Metro area since the state meet became a sanctioned event in 1926. Jay Borschel of Linn-Mar is the only four-time state champion in Metro history with titles in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Barry Davis of Cedar Rapids Prairie (1978-79-80), Matt McDonough of Linn-Mar (2006-07-08) and Mel Wieland of Cedar Rapids Jefferson (1960-61-62) were three-time state champions.

The two-time state champions from the Metro area are Steve Childs (Jefferson 1962-63), Dan Dubishar (Prairie 1970-71), Matt Hatcher (Prairie 1991-92), Mark Ironside (Jefferson 1992-93), Gary McCall (Washington 1984-85), Dan Osborn (Prairie 1987, 1989), Lance Paulson (Kennedy 1988-89), John Regan (LaSalle 1983-84), Mike Shedek (Xavier 2000-01), Joey Slaton (Kennedy 2004-05) and Jim Zalesky (Prairie 1978-79).

The Metro area is sending 26 wrestlers to the individual state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. Thursday with 16 wrestlers in each weight class.

Tyler Burrell of Washington is ranked No. 1 at 285 pounds entering the tournament. He'll face Nick Terpstra of Cedar Falls in the opening round.

Andrew Netolicky of Prairie will wrestle top-ranked Willie Miklus of Southeast Polk in the first round at 220 pounds. Netolicky is ranked fourth at 220, but the brackets are pre-determined and not based on seedings.

Damon Griffin of Linn-Mar could face top-ranked Colby Knight of Urbandale in the second round at 120 pounds if he defeats Jordan Easton of Council Bluffs Lincoln in his first bout.

Jordin Eicher of Washington drew second-ranked Jack Hathaway of Iowa City West in the first round at 126 and could face top-ranked Cory Clark of Southeast Polk in the second round.

Sean Ickes of Xavier will wrestle second-ranked Dylan Blackford of Southeast Polk in the first round at 152 pounds.

Prairie - Wrestling

Solid effort sends Prairie to district title

It wasn't spectacular, but it was solid.

Prairie crowned seven champions and qualified nine wrestlers for next week's state wrestling meet during Saturday's Class 3A district meet at Kennedy.

Prairie won the district meet with 277 points. Western Dubuque was second with 220, Kennedy (140) third, Jefferson (125.5) fifth, and Washington (118) sixth.

Prairie will wrestle in the dual meet state tournament on Wednesday. The traditional meet starts Thursday and runs through Sunday. Both meets are at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Prairie 152 pound wrestler senior Zach Witte was the most dominant Hawk and likely the most dominant wrestler at the meet.

“It felt like a solid day,” Witte said. “I can’t complain.”

Witte made quick work of his three opponents with fast pins to capture first place and a state berth at 152 pounds after winning the state championship last year at 145 pounds.

“I added some weight. I wrestled at 145 for two years so I needed to go up,” Witte said on the jump to 152. “I feel good at 152.”

Witte hopes to repeat but said he feels feels no pressure.

“My one and only goal is to do what I did last year," he said. "I don’t feel any pressure though. It’s a new year and a new weight.”

Prairie’s other champions were Josh Wenger (113), Chris Walters (120), Trey Blaha (126), Peyton Wagner (145), Cameron Rathje (170) and Austin Gould (182). Casey Becker (160) and Andrew Netolicky (220) also qualified with second-place finishes.

Prairie Coach Blake Williams was satisfied with the day but would have liked to have qualified a few more wrestlers.

“It was a good day but you’re never satisfied at districts," he said. "We would have liked to get one or two more in.”

Prairie finished tied for 12th at last year's state meet, but has hopes for higher finish this time around.

“Our number one goal is to place everyone then see how high they can get,” Williams said. “We want to score as many points as possible down there.”

Prairie's Becker spoiled the day of Kennedy senior Shane Williams, ranked sixth at 160, when he pinned him in the semis.  Williams, with more than 100 career victories, finished third but missed the cut for the state meet.

“It proves that on any given day anyone can be beat,” Williams said of his loss to Becker. “He can be very dangerous when he hits his moves. I am happy for him.”

Despite the disappointment at 160, the Cougars crowned two champs: Luke Kremer at 132 and Ryan Rodriguez at 138.

“For the most part I thought we wrestled hard. There are two or three matches throughout the day we would like to have back,” Kennedy Coach Brent Paulsen said. “Williams' semi would be one. It was nothing he did, it just didn’t work out the way we wanted.”

Kremer had to go two overtimes to beat Western Dubuque's Nick Steger. Kremer qualified for his fourth state meet and will be out to improve on his third place finish from a year ago.

“Hopefully I can win it. I want to be in the finals,” Kremer said of his goal at state.

Kremer rode Steger to start the second overtime, denying him a point, and then got a reversal for the win.

“I was confident on the bottom, but a little worried about being able to ride him,” Kremer said. “It was an intense and tiring match.”

Rodriguez got revenge on Prairie's Skyler St. John to take first at 138 and head back to state.

“He beat me twice this year,” Rodriguez said of St. John. “The first two early takedowns got my confidence up.”

Kennedy had a chance to send another pair to state in wrestlebacks, but Ben Feuerhelm got beat at 145 and Sean Knox had to drop out at 152 due to injury.

“He just came back about a week ago,” Paulsen said. “It was the right thing to do. He is only a freshman we didn’t want to risk his future.”

Washington's Tyler Burrell won the 285 pound title and the Warriors also qualified Jordin Eicher (126) and Kaisar Herz (152).

Burrell is ranked first in 3A and finished sixth at state last year.

“My expectation has always been to win the championship, even last year,” Burrell said.

Washington Coach Matt Hatcher thought his team performed at the level they expected and was proud of all his guys.

“It was about what we expected," Hatcher said. "I am proud of everyone and happy for the guys that made it.”

Jefferson had high expectations, but qualified only one wrestler for state.

“It is the biggest train wreck I have been on,” Jefferson Coach Dick Briggs said. “It is very disappointing. I knew we were on the bubble but thought we could have done better.”

PJ Rashed took second at 113 to advance to state, but that was about the only bright spot for the J-Hawks.

“It is exciting but I wish I had company,” Rashed said. “I thought I deserved it. I worked really hard to get here and felt like I needed to go.”

“I’m proud of him. He worked really hard last summer,” Briggs said. “You get what you earn.”

Jefferson has youth on its side though and could have great things to come in the future.

“We will see how they react to this. If they accept it and don’t do anything to improve we don’t get anything out of today,” Briggs said. “I am excited about our future though.”

Prairie matmen flatten North Scott

Prairie started with a pair of pins and rolled past North Scott, 48-25, Wednesday in Class 3A regional dual meet wrestling tournament match at Prairie.

The Hawks (28-6) advance to next week's state dual meet tournament at Des Moines. Prairie is seeded sixth and will face third-seeded Iowa City West (33-3) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. on Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena. Semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. and the championship at 7 p.m.

Prairie recorded five pins, a technical fall and a major decision. The Hawks built a 48-9 lead before North Scott won the last three bouts - one by major decision and two by falls.

Trent Schulte and Andrew Netolicky posted pins at 195 pounds and 220 to start the match and boost Prairie to a 12-0 lead.

North Scott's Chad Oerman bested Tony Kavanagh, 10-5, at 285, and the Lancers received six points for a forfeit at 106 to pull within 12-9.

That's when Prairie resumed its pinning parade.

Josh Wenger (113), Chris Walters (120) and Trey Blaha (126) decked their foes, boosting Prairie's lead to 30-9.

And the Hawks weren't done.

Zach Becicka (132) scored a decision, Skyler St. John (138) a major decision, Peyton Wagner (145) a technical fall and Zach Witte (152) received a forfeit.

The onslaught boosted Prairie's lead to 48-9.

Prairie called off the dogs for the final three matches, sitting Casey Becker (160), Cameron Rathje (170) and Austin Gould (182).
