Blaha win sparks Prairie

Trey Blaha never beat Alijah Jeffery in AAU youth wrestling tournaments, but they're freshmen in high school now and Blaha has fired the first shot.

Blaha defeated Jeffery in a battle of ranked 103-pounders Thursday night to help Prairie trim Linn-Mar, 30-27, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet at Linn-Mar.

Jeffery won both times they meet on the AAU circuit, but Blaha prevailed Thursday with a solid 9-4 victory.

"The team needed me. I had to pull through," he said.

Jeffery was ranked No. 5 in the state by The Predicament with a 26-2 record heading into Thursday's showdown, while Blaha was ranked No. 9 with a 26-4 mark.

Walters wins title; Hawks 3rd

GENESEO, Ill. -- As Iowa's only representatives in a 15-team Geneseo Invitational, Prairie and Kennedy stepped up to the challenge Friday and Saturday.

Prairie finished third and Kennedy sixth in the tournament that showcases teams from Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa.

The tournament featured top wrestlers from the tri-state area and nationally-ranked wrestlers at a number of weights. Three Illinois wrestlers pinned their way through the tournament.

Iowa City West hangs 1st MVC loss on Hawks

IOWA CITY -- Top-ranked Iowa City West dealt Prairie its first Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling defeat Thursday night, 59-3.

Prairie's only winner was Alex Steenblock was the Hawks' only winner, beating Mike Watkins 3-1 at 171 pounds.

West had four pins, three technical falls and two major decisions.

Prairie decked Washington, 58-12, to garner a split. The Hawks (19-3, 9-1 MVC) had five pins.

Hawks win Marshalltown title

MARSHALLTOWN -- Prairie won all five of its meets and won the Marshalltown Invitational Dual tournament Saturday.

No individual meet results were available.
