Prairie pins Mason City for regional title

There won't be any votes before the Prairie Hawks meet Linn-Mar in the opening round of the Class 3A state dual meet wrestling tournament in Des Moines next Wednesday.

If Coach Blake Williams tells his guys to back off and wait for the individual state tournament that starts next Thursday, that's what they'll do. And if decides to use his top lineup against Linn-Mar and aim for the title, they'll do that as well.

Prairie collected seven pins and squashed No.14 Mason City, 55-17, in the regional finals Wednesday night at Prairie to earn another trip to the state dual meet tournament next week.

The fourth-ranked Hawks (20-3) will face No.5 Linn-Mar (22-6) in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

Prairie matmen claim 2nd MVC title in row

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team has developed a wonderful new habit at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet the last two years.

They keep winning it.

The Hawks withstood a spirited challenge from the Jefferson J-Hawks Saturday and claimed their second straight title at the MVC Super Meet in Waterloo.

Prairie snapped an 18-year drought when it won the conference title last year, grabbing its first crown since back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. Now these Hawks have won back-to-back championships as well.

No.7 Prairie grapplers handle J-Hawks

The surging Jefferson wrestling team has enjoyed a special season this year with upset victories over Linn-Mar and Iowa City West, so the Prairie Hawks knew the J-Hawks would be gunning for their hides as well Thursday night.

The Prairie matmen did not say much about the challenge before the meet, but they spoke volumes with their performance on the mat.

The seventh-ranked Hawks surged to a 32-10 lead and claimed an impressive 35-25 victory in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet on Senior Night at Jefferson.

Prairie Coach Blake Williams did not spend a lot of time - if any - reminding his guys that the J-Hawks were a dangerous club that had already taken care of Linn-Mar and Iowa City West, a pair of conference top-10 heavyweights.
