Hawks sending 8 to state

Linn-Mar wrestling coach Doug Streicher never panicked when the Lions kept losing to Cedar Rapids Prairie during the season.

He knew he had a potent lineup that could accomplish great things this season once it was healthy and fully assembled.

They proved it Saturday.

Linn-Mar topped Prairie for the Class 3A district title with an impressive performance Saturday and qualified a school-record 12 grapplers for the state meet.

Prairie wrestlers want shot at dual meet title

The wrestlers at Cedar Rapids Prairie want to put their best lineup on the mat for the state dual meet tournament next Wednesday in Des Moines and take a shot at the title.

It's not a simple answer.

The second-ranked Hawks topped 12th-ranked West Des Moines Valley, 40-29, in the regional tournament Wednesday night at Prairie to advance to the state meet.

Prairie claims share of MVC mat crown

DUBUQUE - Prairie dusted off Kennedy and Dubuque Hempstead to finish in a tie with Linn-Mar for the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division wrestling title Thursday night at Hempstead.

The Hawks (24-3, 12-1) clobbered Kennedy 53-22 and pummelled Hempstead 62-13.

Prairie may have suffered a blow to its state dual meet title hopes, however. Josh Wenger, the Hawks' 126-pounder, had to default because of injury in his match against Kennedy's Nathan Waterhouse.

Prairie wins first MVC wrestling title since 1995

The oldest members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team were born in 1994 and 1995, which is an odd coincidence.

Those are the only two years the Hawks had ever won the Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling tournament. Until now, that is.

Prairie ended its 18-year dry spell in the MVC tournament by claiming top honors Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Washington gym.
