St. John wins 145 title for Prairie at Geneseo

GENESEO, Ill. - Skyler St. John won the 145-pound title at the Geneseo Invitational wrestling tournament to help the Prairie Hawks finish third in the team standings.

St. John defeated Corey Abernathy of Waverly-Shell Rock, 8-1, in the championship match of the 20-team tournament.

Waverly-Shell Rock captured the team title in a close battle with Bettendorf and Prairie. Waverly-Shell Rock finished with 193 points. Bettendorf nipped Prairie for second place by a half-point, 182 to 181.5.

Three Prairie wrestlers finished second in their weight class with Josh Wenger (126), Trey Blaha (138) and Andrew Netolicky (285) reaching the finals before falling.

Prairie decks Xavier and Waterloo West

WATERLOO - Prairie wrestlers recorded 12 pins and steamrolled Xavier and Waterloo West Thursday night at West High School.

The Hawks had eight pins in a 63-10 rout of Xavier and four pins in a 45-22 win over West.

Jesse Hynek (220), Josh Wenger and Skyler St. John (145) had two falls apiece.

Prairie wrestlers roll to Ames title

AMES - Prairie crowned four champions Saturday and won the Jack Mendenhall Invitational wrestling meet.

Prairie topped an 18-team field with 218 points. Dowling Catholic was second with 173.5. Jefferson tied for 10th with 101 points and Kennedy was 15th with 54.

Prairie placed five wrestlers in the championship round and four won. Sam Uthoff (106), Trey Blaha (138), Skyler St. John (152) and Andrew Netolicky (285) won titles.

Cam Rathje (170) finished second, Jamie Day (145) and Jesse Hynek (220) were third and Casey Becker (195) was fourth.

Prairie, Linn-Mar rank 2-3 in wrestling

Cedar Rapids Prairie is ranked No.2 and Linn-Mar is No.3 in the initial Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association Class 3A dual team rankings for the 2012-13 season.

Southeast Polk is ranked No.1 in Class 3A.

West Delaware is ranked No.1 in Class 2A, thanks in large part to its 4-0 record against Prairie and Linn-Mar in dual meet tournaments this season.

Prairie has a 13-2 record, with both of its losses to West Delaware. Linn-Mar has a 9-6 record, with two losses to West Delaware and two losses to Prairie.

Prairie grapplers claim 2nd at Waterloo

WATERLOO -- The second verse was similar to the first for the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team Saturday.

For the second straight week, the Hawks were defeated by West Delaware in the championship round of a major tournament.

Last week it was the Five Seasons Duals in Cedar Rapids. This week it was the prestigious Battle of Waterloo at Young Arena.

West Delaware clipped Prairie, 38-24, Saturday to leave Prairie with the silver medal again.

The final round of the 32-team tournament was a four-team round robin between four of the top wrestling programs in Iowa with West Delaware (No.1 in Class 2A), Davenport Assumption (No.2 in Class 2A), Linn-Mar (No.2 in Class 3A) and Prairie (No.4 in Class 3A).

The Linn-Mar Lions lost all three of their matches to finish in fourth place. Linn-Mar lost to Assumption (45-25), West Delaware (42-28) and Prairie (41-21).
