Warriors top City High in MVC opener

IOWA CITY - A.J. Puk got the victory and drove in two runs Tuesday as Cedar Rapids Washington trimmed Iowa City High, 4-3, in the Mississippi Valley Conference opener at Mercer Park.

The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to lightning.

Puk struck out six batters and scattered three hits.

Johnny Dobbs and Alex Nichols drove in runs for the Warriors (3-1). Chris Harrington struck out three batters in two innings and collected the save.

Saints pound Warriors for title

If baseball practice ever gets tedious at Xavier High School this season, Coach Dave Schemmel could simply blow his whistle and tell the guys to line up for a game of touch football.

These Saints would know exactly what to do.

Schemmel has 28 players on his roster this season, and 21 of them played football last fall and helped Xavier reach the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs and finish with a sparkling 13-1 record.

Many of the same guys who excelled in football have helped the Saints get off to a fast start in baseball, too.

Xavier whipped the Washington Warriors, 11-1, in six innings Thursday night to win the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament at the Linn-Mar complex.

Metro baseball finals set for Thursday

The Washington Warriors and Xavier Saints will meet in the championship game of the Metro Baseball Tournament on Thursday at approximately 7 p.m. at the Linn-Mar complex.

The championship and third-place games, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium, were postponed due to wet grounds. The games were moved from Veterans Memorial Stadium to Linn-Mar because the stadium is booked for a high school doubleheader Thursday night between Highland and Washington (Iowa).

Kennedy will play Linn-Mar in the third-place game Thursday at 5 p.m. at Linn-Mar. The championship game will follow.

Warriors top Cougars for spot in finals

Zac Gillis singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night to give Washington a 3-2 victory over Kennedy in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Baseball Tournament.

The Warriors (2-0) will face Xavier (2-0) in the finals Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I was a bit nervous, but on the second pitch I got what I was looking for,” said Gillis. “I went oppo (opposite field) and we got the hit we needed to win the game.”

Dobbs' blast lifts Wash past Mustangs

Johnny Dobbs' two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning broke a 6-6 tie and sent Washington past Mount Vernon, 8-6, Monday in the first round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament at Marion.

Washington built a 5-1 lead in the first five innings behind the two-hit, 14-strikeout pitching of senior A.J. Puk. But Puk was done after five and the Warriors' defense deserted them in the bottom of the seventh when they committed four errors and Mount Vernon scored four runs to tie the game, 6-6.

Puk also contributed three hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning.
