Poor shooting sinks Warriors

Minnetonka High School might be the best 3-and-8 team in Minnesota. And they know how to play defense.

Friday night at the Warrior Gym, the Skippers limited all-state guard Josh Oglesby to a dismal 1-for-8 3-point shooting night and won a 60-51 non-conference game.

“We were able to make Oglesby work for every shot he took and that was part of the plan,” Minnetonka Coach Tom Dasovich said. “We know what a great player he is. The University of Iowa is getting a good one.”

With Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery looking on, Oglesby hit just 5-of-17 shots and scored 16 points, five below his average. Minnetonka employed a stifling straight-up man-to-man defense, forcing the 6-foot-6 senior into some tough shots.

Oglesby came into the game averaging 21.3 points and shooting a remarkable 62 percent from behind the arc. He scored only one point in the fourth quarter.

Washington connected on just 3-of-18 3-pointers (16 percent) and hit on 37 percent overall (18-for-49). Minnetonka shot 49 percent.

Washpun's shot lifts Warriors

Wes Washpun has made a bunch of great passes for the Washington boys basketball team during his career. This time he caught one and knew exactly what to do with it.

Washpun banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer from about 28 feet Tuesday night to lift the seventh-ranked Warriors by Iowa City West, 54-52, at the Washington gym.

Alex Carr, a terrific tailback for the Washington football team, was the quarterback on the game-winning play. Washpun was the receiver and hero.

Oglesby drains 8 3s in Warriors loss

The Mississippi Valley Conference is loaded with strong teams this year, with four of them residing here in the Metro area with Linn-Mar, Jefferson, Kennedy and Washington. There are other strong clubs around the state, which is why Fontana doesn’t think his team should be ranked so high.

“We’re not the fourth-best team in the state,” he insisted. “I would have put Wash, Jeff and Linn-Mar ahead of us, and I would have put Cedar Falls ahead of us.

“I’d say right now we’re a top-10 team, but I’d say we’re more around 9 or 10. We have a lot of things to iron out before we’re in the top-4.”

Warriors handcuff Uthoff and J-Hawks

If you stop Jarrod Uthoff, you stop the J-Hawks.

That’s exactly what Washington did Dec. 17.

The 10th-ranked Warriors held the state’s leading scorer without a field goal in the final 14 minutes of the game and tripped No.3 Jefferson, 49-41, before a packed gym at Washington.

Uthoff, a 6-foot-8 senior who has signed with Wisconsin, began the game with a gaudy 31.8 average, albeit against less than robust competition. The Warriors held him to 17 points in the game and to just two points in the fourth quarter, both on free throws.

Oglesby, Washpun lead Wash into new season

Josh Oglesby and Wes Washpun formed a potent 1-2 punch for Washington last season when they combined to average 31.3 points and led the Warriors to the state tournament.

The two seniors are better than ever.

“I think everybody improves as they get older and keep working at it,” Washington Coach Brad Metzger said, “and they kept working at it.”

Oglesby, a 6-foot-6 guard with a deft touch, contributed 16.2 points, hit 40 percent of his 3-pointers and parlayed his talent into a scholarship at the University of Iowa.
