Making the grade: Improved study habits may earn Washpun DI offers

In a pivotal play of his team’s 49-41 upset of Cedar Rapids Jefferson this season, Washington’s Wes Washpun rocked the home gym when he blocked a shot by Jefferson’s Jarrod Uthoff.

At 6-foot-8, the Wisconsin-bound superstar is not used to being embarrassed, especially at the long hands of an AAU summer league teammate who is easily more than a half-foot shorter.

But from his grade school days at Polk Elementary in Cedar Rapids, when he was on a kids squad with future all-staters Marcus Paige of Linn-Mar and Kasey Semler of Marion, Washpun has had springs in his skinny legs. He’s always jumped center, even now as the 6-foot-1 senior point guard for the Warriors.

Washpun shines as Warriors spank Prairie

James Moses saw enough of Wes Washpun Friday night (Dec. 10) to offer some friendly advice to college basketball coaches around the country.

You need to take a serious look at this guy.

Washpun scored 22 points and excelled at all facets of the game as No.4 Washington topped Prairie, 61-40, in a Mississippi Valley Conference affair at Washington.

Oglesby ready to run-and-gun with the Hawkeyes

Sure, he’s a proud dad.

But after 32 years of coaching basketball, the last five as an assistant at Mount Mercy University following a successful stint at Kirkwood, Ted Oglesby knows college talent, too.

And he’s convinced his high school senior son Josh will shine next year for the revitalized run-and-gun Iowa Hawkeyes under new coach Fran McCaffery.
