Oglesby gets early start in coaching

Josh Oglesby has tweaked his basketball dream.

Instead of playing pro basketball for a living, he'd like to coach the game he loves at the highest level in college.

He's gotten off to an early start.

Oglesby, 23, is currently working as a volunteer assistant coach with the men's basketball program at Mount Mercy University and he's also running his own basketball camps at the college in northeast Cedar Rapids.

Oglesby starred at Cedar Rapids Washington, where he was the Class 4A Player of the Year in 2011, and he was a four-year letterman for the Iowa Hawkeyes, graduating in 2015 with 126 3-pointers to rank eighth in school history.

Oglesby, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, scored 633 games during his UI career and averaged a modest five points per game. He enjoyed his four years with the Hawkeyes, even though he did not have as much individual success as he wanted.

Williams, Wills lift Wash by Cougars

New Cedar Rapids Washington coach Justin Decker thought Laveechie Williams would miss the first few weeks of the basketball season after Williams broke his nose in early November before practice began.

Decker may have underestimated the 6-foot-5 senior a little bit.

Williams slapped a mask on his face for the season opener and has been a major force with the Warriors, averaging a double-double with 13.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.

The Masked Marvel did it again Tuesday night.

Williams scored 15 points and snared 11 rebounds with fierce work off the backboards to help Washington hold off the Kennedy Cougars, 55-51, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Washington gym.

Williams is making an early bid for all-conference honors despite having limited vision due to the mask. "My vision is so bad," he said. "When I look to my left or right, I can't even see."

He sees everything in front of him, however, and was a big reason the Warriors squared their records at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MVC.

Printy enjoys return to Washington

Everybody knew about it, but nothing was said.

Linn-Mar's basketball game Thursday night at Washington marked the return of Jared Printy to the gym where he played the first three years of his prep career.

Printy transferred to Linn-Mar for his senior season and everybody in the Lions' camp knew the atmosphere would be more charged than usual when the two teams met.

"We didn't talk about it at all," Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. "He knew, but we didn't talk about it."

After a bit of a slow start, Printy had a successful homecoming. He scored 18 points, including three 3-point baskets in the third quarter, helping the Lions to a 69-49 win.

"I knew it was going to be crazy intense," Printy said. "I didn't think I could possibly be unprepared for it, but it was intense out there. Both teams played so hard and it was a really fun game to be a part of."

Lions senior Jordan Bohannon, who led all scorers with 22 points, thought his teammate handled the situation well.

Warriors whipped by Bettendorf

Cedar Rapids Washington coach Justin Decker did not like the way his team prepared for Friday night's basketball game against the Bettendorf Bulldogs at the Washington gym.

The results showed on the court.

Bettendorf killed the Warriors with put-backs and dumped the home team, 58-43, in a non-conference game.

Bettendorf scored 16 points following offensive rebounds and won the game by 15. Decker did not have to look much further to see the difference in the game.

"I figured if we were out-toughed and out-disciplined we were going to lose the game, and that's exactly what happened from the start," he said. "Our guys played hard, but I didn't think they were prepared and ready to go.

"They exposed us, obviously, on the glass. We turned it over too much. We left a lot of possessions out there. I figured if we did that we were going to lose."
