Washington girls missing two key bowlers

Traci Mooney thinks Cedar Rapids Washington could have a good girls bowling team this season, but it might take a while to put the pieces together.

Keely Pernicka and Bryttanie Huff, two letterwinners, will be academically ineligible until early January. That leaves only two experienced bowlers for the season opener Monday afternoon at Dubuque Senior with Ashley Duffy and Courtney Snodgrass leading the way.

The Warriors have 28 girls on the team with stiff competition for varsity berths. "It's a tossup," Mooney said.

Mooney thinks freshman Lynze Moon could be a good addition. "She has experience," Mooney said, "but never has she bowled in high school competition."

Kelly Waters, who bowled for the varsity last year, will begin the season with the junior varsity.

Washington finished 4-7 in the Mississippi Valley Conference last season and 8-11 overall. "I think it might be about the same this year," Mooney said.

She thinks the Warriors could have been a .500 team at full strength, but will need time to develop a full squad until Pernicka and Huff are eligible.

Olivia LaGrange and Rachel Spencer graduated from last year's team.
