Warriors drill West, look ahead to playoffs

It's not often that you hear a football coach speaking to his team about its next three games.

Yet, that's what Washington Coach Tony Lombardi was doing on the Kingston Stadium turf Thursday night, shortly after the Warriors had dispatched Waterloo West, 49-7, to end the regular season.

Will Griffin ran 29 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns, and Braedon Tovey and Mitch Bredeson ran for two touchdowns apiece for Washington (6-3). The Warriors rolled up 380 yards of rushing offense and held Waterloo West (0-9) to 184 total yards.

Healthy Warriors hope to make run in playoffs

Think back with the Cedar Rapids Washington football team to this past August.

A.J. Puk, the starting quarterback, quits the team to concentrate on his promising baseball career.

Will Griffin, the heir apparent as the next star tailback at Tailback High, hurts his ankle and needs surgery. He'll miss five games before limping back.

Ryan Cain, a top defensive back and receiver, breaks his collarbone and will miss four games.

On top of that, you'll face a three-game stretch during the second half of the season against powerful Iowa City High, Linn-Mar and Iowa City West.

Warriors wax No. 9 Iowa City West, 66-37

IOWA CITY - There is something about playing in Iowa City that brings out the best in the Cedar Rapids Washington football team.

Two weeks ago, the Warriors traveled to Iowa City High and took down the Little Hawks, who were ranked No. 2 in state at the time.

On Friday night, Washington was at it again and exploded on No. 9 Iowa City West, winning 66-37 at Trojan Field.

After a disappointing 56-7 loss to Linn-Mar last week, the Warriors bounced back in style against the speedy Trojans.

“You know what? Our kids rebounded really well,” said Washington Coach Tony Lombardi. “When I looked at this spot on our schedule and knew we had those three teams in a row, if we were to win two out of the three I would have been thrilled and we did so.”

Washington (5-3, 2-3) clinched a playoff berth with this victory, and Lombardi was excited to see his team come out and play with a chip on its shoulder.

No. 3 Lions demolish Washington, 56-7

The Linn-Mar Lions have been getting the love in the Associated Press football poll with a No. 3 ranking, but they've been hearing the whispers about the quality of their schedule.

The Lions were undefeated but had played only one team with a winning record heading into Friday night's game against Washington, which was fresh off an upset of then-No. 2 Iowa City High a week earlier.

"We can't control the things we can't control and the schedule is one thing we can't control," Linn-Mar senior Mark Atwater said of the 8-29 mark sported by Linn-Mar's previous foes. "They give us people and we just go play them."

Make that maul them.

Linn-Mar's Andy Henry returned a punt for a touchdown and caught three scoring passes from Atwater and the Lions routed the Warriors, 56-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division game at Kingston Stadium.

Storhm Henry was 1 of Washington's gladiators

Cedar Rapids Washington broke the huddle and turned toward the line of scrimmage during Friday's game at Iowa City High when one of the Warriors suddenly fell in a heap.

It was Storhm Henry, one of Washington's offensive linemen, and for a few scary moments he was lying face down in the grass as medical personnel and coaches rushed to his side.

"It was the most painful thing I've ever experienced," Henry said Monday after practice. "The game before that I had a deep thigh bruise, and this was about 10 times worse than that."

Henry had been struck by severe cramps in the upper parts of both legs, making it impossible to move, probably from dehydration. He finally was helped to his feet and waddled to the sideline.

"It just stunned me," he said. "I had to walk off like an old man. I was really bent down."

This happened during the third quarter. Washington Coach Tony Lombardi did not like what he saw. "I thought he's got to be done for the game," the coach said Monday.
