Warriors stun No.2 Little Hawks in final seconds

IOWA CITY - Tony Lombardi played football at Arizona State and coached at two schools in the Big Ten, so he's seen a few remarkable games over the years.

Nothing tops what he saw Friday night in Iowa City, when The Drive stopped The Streak.

Braedon Tovey fired a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Cain with 10 seconds left to cap a brilliant 69-yard drive as the Washington Warriors stunned No. 2 Iowa City High, 27-24, at Bates Field.

The Little Hawks had won 33 straight regular-season games in the Mississippi Valley Conference before running into the Warriors, who spoiled their homecoming.

Washington got the ball at its own 31-yard line with 6:49 left in the game, trailing 24-20, and never gave it back to City High, keeping Little Hawk tailback Ronald Thompson harmlessly on the bench. It was ball control at its best.

The Warriors drove 69 yards in 18 plays, collecting five first downs and methodically moving down the field until they hit paydirt on Tovey's missile to Cain in the end zone.

"Braedon put the ball on the money, the offensive line blocked great," said Cain, who missed the first four games of the season with a broken collarbone. "It was just a great overall sequence."

Will Griffin cleared to play football for Warriors

Cedar Rapids Washington tailback Will Griffin has not played football all season due to ankle surgery in August, but he's still being recruited by Drake, South Dakota State, Winona State, Eastern Illinois and possibly the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Just think what might happen if he ever carries the ball.

Griffin was supposed to be Washington's featured tailback this year, but he injured his right ankle during the first week of training camp and has been reduced to a cheerleader and informal coach ever since. That could change soon.

Griffin has been cleared to play in Friday night's game at No. 2 Iowa City High, but Washington Coach Tony Lombardi said Griffin is not ready to carry the load.

"He is not at full speed. Not even close," Lombardi said after practice Thursday.

Lombardi wants to give Griffin a few snaps, if possible, to get him back in the swing of things after missing the first five games of the season. He thinks Griffin needs to play in a game to accelerate his recovery, as long as he doesn't overdo it.

Bredeson stars as Warriors clip Rams, 35-10

DUBUQUE – Mitch Bredeson is starting to make a name for himself as Washington’s featured running back.

Bredeson rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns to help the Warriors snap a two-game losing streak with a 35-10 victory over Dubuque Senior Friday at Dalzell Field.

Bredeson needed 30 carries to reach his rushing total, and every one of his plunges came with heavy resistance from Senior’s front seven. In other words, the Washington junior earned his yards against the Rams.

“I give all the credit to my (offensive) line,” Bredeson said. “They did a great job tonight. I’m doing a better job reading my holes and getting to the second level.”

Bredeson has stepped in for injured tailback Will Griffin. Washington Coach Tony Lombardi admires Bredeson’s work ethic.

“He’s a tough kid,” Lombardi said. “He’s really coming into his own. We have asked a lot of our kids off the field in our strength and conditioning program.

“It’s really showing out on the field. I’m really proud of him.”

Bredeson’s longest run of the night came on the final play of the first quarter. He broke off a 64-yard touchdown run up the middle to give Washington (3-2) a 14-7 lead.

Wahlert's McCarron too much for Warriors

Riley McCarron had two jobs for Dubuque Wahlert's football team Friday night against Washington.

McCarron had to direct Wahlert's offense at quarterback and shut down record-setting Washington wide receiver Flynn Heald on defense.

Check and check.

McCarron threw four touchdown passes and intercepted two passes to lead Wahlert past the Warriors, 31-10, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kingston Stadium.

The loss was the second straight for Washington (2-2) after winning its first two to open the season.

The score was tied at 10-10 at halftime.

Wahlert (3-1) took the second half kickoff and went 62 yards in 47 seconds to take a lead it did not surrender. McCarron tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior Nate Pierotti for the go-ahead score with 11:13 to play in the third quarter.

It was the second touchdown pass of the night for McCarron who fired scoring passes of 55, 8 and 29 yards to senior Brady Williams. The first came in the first half. The 8-yard scoring pass gave the Golden Eagles a two-score cushion at 24-10 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The 29-yard pass play all but sealed the win with 6:42 to play.

Colleges impressed with Heald's 21 receptions

Flynn Heald took an official recruiting trip to Indiana University last weekend. While there, his hosts wondered how he did in his game for Cedar Rapids Washington on Friday night.

"Well, we lost," Heald told the IU coaches.

"That's too bad," they said. "How did you do in the game?"

"Oh, I did all right," he replied.

"Catch any balls?" they wondered.

"Yeah," he said. "Twenty-one."

"Twenty-one!," they exclaimed. "Are you kidding? Twenty-one receptions in one game?"

Yup, 21.

"That's almost the exact conversation," Heald said Tuesday, grinning at the memory.
