Warriors top City High for district title

IOWA CITY - The Washington Warriors nearly had to pinch themselves after they scored 27 points in the first six minutes of their showdown with Iowa City High on Friday Night at Bates Field.

"I was thinking, what a crazy game," Washington tailback Tavian Patrick said when it was over.

It was crazy all right, but it got crazy scary for awhile, too.

Iowa City High rallied within 33-20 in the third quarter and could have pulled within 33-27 if they hadn't lost a fumble at the 1-yard line with lots of time on the clock.

The fifth-ranked Warriors pulled themselves together and posted a 39-20 victory to clinch the Class 4A District 6 title and a No. 1 seed for the playoffs that will start Wednesday, Oct. 28 with a home game at Kingston Stadium.

Soph QB sparks No. 6 Warriors

Cedar Rapids Washington’s star players came through as always in Thursday night’s 39-14 Kingston Stadium romp over Prairie.

But who would have thought the game-breakers would end up being a 5-foot-7 linebacker who scored his third touchdown in two weeks and a novice quarterback who warmed up by throwing five touchdown passes earlier in the evening in the sophomore game.

Bryan Kunde played only the first half in the sixth-ranked Warriors' one-sided win in the sophomore contest but ran for one touchdown besides throwing for five. He was then called into duty for the varsity early in the second quarter when starting signal-caller Andrew Dostal was knocked out of the game with a hit to the stomach on a hard tackle.

(Dostal himself was subbing for TJ Vogel, who was in a brace after hurting his knee last week against Ottumwa.)

Nimmers had a big game Friday night when the Warriors walloped Ottumwa, 53-7, in a district game in Ottumwa. He caught six passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns, with all three scores coming in the third quarter.

No. 5 Warriors roll by Ottumwa, 53-7

OTTUMWA - The fifth-ranked Washington Warriors enjoyed a stroll past the Ottumwa Bulldogs, 53-7, in a Class 4A district game Friday at Schafer Stadium in Ottumwa.

Isaiah Nimmers caught three touchdown passes and the Warriors held Ottumwa to just 85 yards in total offense.

Nimmers scored all three of his touchdowns in the third quarter on a 54-yard pass from Drew Dostal, a 23-yard pass from TJ Vogel and a 39-yard strike from Dostal. Nimmers snared six passes for 149 yards in the contest.

No. 6 Warriors rally by Muscatine

MUSCATINE - Paul James left the visitor's pressbox at the Muscatine football field in the second half Friday night and positioned himself near the top row of the bleachers to get a better view of the game.

The Cedar Rapids Washington coach liked what he saw a lot better.

The sixth-ranked Warriors scored 21 straight points in the second half and rallied for a 35-21 victory over seventh-ranked Muscatine in the Class 4A, District 6 opener in Muscatine.

The windows in the visitor's press box could have used a good scrubbing to improve the visibility, according to a Metro Sports Report observer, and James felt a little confined in the facility.

"It is kind of an old MAC (Mississippi Athletic Conference) tradition to have a smaller press box for the visitors on the opposite side of the field from the home team and the more spacious press box for the home teams, but I didn't really care for that," James said. "It helped for me to move up to the corner of the stands in the second half."
