Wash girls making 1st state soccer trip

By the end of the night, Washington girls soccer coach Sean McCoy was drenched and smiling from ear to ear.

After all, the eighth-ranked Warriors (16-3) are headed to the state tournament for the first time.

Washington beat No. 10 Linn-Mar in a hard fought 1-0 Class 3A regional final at Kingston Stadium on Monday.

“We have been working all year for this. People didn’t think we could make it. It was a rebuilding year for us so we are just excited that we get to go,” said Washington senior Ashley Piper.

“At the beginning of the year, we thought it was going to be a rebuilding year,” McCoy said. “But these kids decided that we would work, we would buy into some things that maybe we wouldn’t have in the past and the results have been phenomenal."

The Warriors will face top-ranked Ankeny in the first round of the state tournament Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at the Muscatine Soccer Complex. The Hawkettes (18-1) have been tough this season, outscoring opponents, 93-5, and have won 13 games by at least three goals.

“Ankeny is the one team in the state that is a little bit above everyone else, but they are also a physical team and that’s something that we can deal with,” McCoy said. “If they were lightning fast like a Kennedy or a Valley we are going to struggle ... With the players they have, we will be able to match up and give them a game.

"It is going to be like 10 of the other games we have played this year where, on paper, they are a little bit better. But we are on a bit of a high right now and if we can train and focus, there is no reason we can’t give them a good show.”

The regional championship game was a physical matchup of two teams that went to penalty kicks earlier in the season with Washington winning.

“It was a rough game, it was a tough game,” McCoy said. "Linn-Mar is a physical team and so are we. There were lots of fouls and lots of free kicks, and that’s just how it is going to be when these two teams get together.”

The Warriors scored the game's lone goal in the 57th minute when sophomore Sarah Keppler fed the ball ahead to junior Maddi Hines, who was able to find enough space on the right side to let loose on a shot. The ball went over the keeper's head and hit the opposite side post before rolling in for the decisive goal.

“She came out and I looked up and just hit it over her,” Hines said. “I tried to kick it as hard as I can.”

Hines said the reward of a state trip is a result of a lot of hard work.

“We pushed each other from spring break and conditioning all the way to yesterday morning,” Hines said. “We were focused in the locker room and we just tried our hardest.”

Washington girls want first trip to state

Cedar Rapids Washington has never sent a team to the girls state soccer tournament.

They're just a game away now.

The eighth-ranked Warriors blanked Dubuque Senior, 6-0, in the regional semifinals Wednesday night at Kingston Stadium and will play for a berth in the state tournament on Monday.

The obstacle will be 10th-ranked Linn-Mar in a match scheduled for Kingston at 7 p.m. Monday.

The Warriors don't like having a "zero" next to the entry for state tournament appearances.

"We have a chance to deal with that on Monday, so it's kind of exciting," said Sean McCoy, in his second year at Washington.

McCoy took Cedar Rapids Kennedy teams to the state tournament when he coached the Cougars. Now he'd like to perform the same trick with the Warriors.

Washington (15-3) sailed into the regional finals with the victory over Dubuque Senior, which won only two games this season.

"I think we played pretty well," said junior Tori Carson, who scored two goals for the Warriors. "We really moved the ball together as a team."

The Warriors defeated Linn-Mar in a shootout earlier this season. Nobody scored in that defensive struggle until the penalty kicks at the very end.

"We're going to have to play really hard and hopefully it will work out for us," Carson said. "It will take a lot of focus to get a goal in."

Linn-Mar reached the regional finals with a 4-0 victory over Dubuque Hempstead Wednesday night at Linn-Mar.

The regional finals Monday night at Kingston Stadium will be an all-Metro affair. Jefferson will face No.4 Kennedy at 5 p.m., followed by No.8 Washington vs. No.10 Linn-Mar at 7 p.m.

Anne Cooper and Sarah Keppler scored goals in the first half Wednesday as the Warriors held a 2-0 edge at intermission. Carson scored on a header to make it 3-0, then scored again to make it 4-0 midway through the second half.

Morgan Bjornsen and Jordon Pilcher finished the scoring for the Warriors.

Washington finished in a first-place tie with Kennedy for the division title. The Warriors close out the regular season Friday at Davenport Central.

Kennedy girls forge tie atop MVC soccer standings

The Kennedy girls soccer team pulled even with Washington atop the Mississippi Valley Conference's Mississippi Division standings Thursday night.

The Cougars, who trailed the Warriors by one game in the standings coming into the game, pitched a shutout with a 2-0 victory at Kingston Stadium.

“It is a big deal to us because we have won the conference for the past four or five years now so it is kind of a tradition we want to hold,” said Kennedy senior forward Shauna Happel. “The fact that they were one game ahead of us coming into the game made us that much more motivation to beat them. We don’t want to lose to Wash and we don’t
want to lose the conference championship, so this was a big one for us.”

Freshman forward Emily Feltes led the way for the Cougars putting in both goals.

“She is one of several freshmen that are just really talented and as they are figuring out the high school system compared to playing in their age appropriate teams, they are doing well,” said Kennedy Coach Homer Screws. “She is really talented, she has a strong foot and she is a true forward. She likes to score goals so it is a nice thing to have.”

Feltes’ first goal came in the 29th minute when she headed a beautiful cross from fellow freshman Kaela Dickerman into the back of the net. Feltes struck again in the 65th minute. She wrestled the ball away from a Washington defender and took advantage of the Warrior keeper coming out and netted her second goal of the night.”

“Teamwork is how it happened,” Feltes said. “It wasn’t me, we all worked together to get those goals.”

The Kennedy defense also came up big, holding the Warriors' attack at bay and forcing them to take tough shots all night long.

“I think we have a lot of talent in our back,” Screws said. “I think it is going to be hard to score goals against us, if we deliver. They are just really talented, physically strong and they have good heads on their shoulders.”

As the season is coming to a close, the Cougars are starting to hit their stride at the right time. They have won four games in a row since a tough 3-1 loss at Xavier.

“I think, coming down the stretch we are getting a lot more activity from everyone,” Happel said. “Like the defense, everyone is starting to learn how people move so we are able to predict each other’s runs and move accordingly.”

Each team has one more conference game left in the regular season. Kennedy faces Cedar Falls (7-8, 4-7) on May 23 and Washington plays Dubuque Hempstead (7-7, 5-6) on May 24. If both the Warriors and the Cougars win, they will share the conference crown.
