Lewis is finalist for national award

Cedar Rapids Washington Coach Megan Lewis has been selected as a finalist for a 2014 National Coach of the Year award.

Lewis is the head girls swimming coach and an assistant boys swimming coach at Washington.

The selection process is sponsored by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Winners are chosen based on coaching longevity, win-loss record, championship years, honors and service at the high school level.

All 152 Coach of the Year and Athletic Director finalists (eight in each of 18 sports) will be honored at the National Awards Banquet at the Sam King Lodge and Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyo., on June 18.

Cougars swamp Wash swimmers

Hannah Botkin was a triple winner and Kennedy won 10 of 12 events to swamp Washington, 136-49, Tuesday in girls swimming at Kennedy.

Botkin won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay. Larkyn Aldrich also won two individual events, claiming the 200 free and 100 breaststroke for the Cougars.

Other Kennedy winners were Kirsten Siebenga (200 IM), Michele Wasta (100 butterfly) and Maddie Bagby (500 free).

Washington's Kaitlyn Nemickas won the 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 200 medley relay team.

Kennedy swept the top three spots in seven events.

Washington - Girls Swimming

Wash swimmers win 4 events

DUBUQUE - Cedar Rapids Washington captured four events in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet against Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday night in Dubuque.

Wahlert won the meet, 109-73.

Jackie Allen claimed the 500 freestyle, Kaitlyn Nemickas won the 100 backstroke and Logan Eckhardt took the 100 breaststroke for Washington.

The Warriors also captured the 200 medley with Nemickas, Olivia Altemeier, Eckhardt and Allen.

Washington - Girls Swimming

Warriors swim 6th at WDM Valley meet

WEST DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Washington swimming team placed sixth out of seven teams at the West Des Moines Valley meet Saturday.

Waukee edged Valley for the title, 514-512.

Washington finished 8th in the 200 medley relay, 9th in the 200 freestyle relay and 10th in the 400 freestyle relay.

Kaitlyn Nemickas placed 9th in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.45 for the Warriors.

Nemickas scores Wash's lone win

Dubuque Senior won 11 of 12 events and routed Washington, 130-55, Tuesday night at the Warrior pool.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Nemickas won the 100 backstroke for Washington's only win.
