Frank Howell will coach Washington boys tennis

Frank Howell was named to replace the late Dave Meyer as boys tennis coach at Washington High School on Wednesday.

Meyer, 49, died Saturday. His services were held Tuesday.

Howell is the girls basketball coach at Washington and a social studies teacher at the school. He played tennis in the Iowa Conference at William Penn College.

Howell has compiled a 147-46 record with the girls basketball program and has led the Warriors to five state tournaments.

"In this extremely difficult time, Frank Howell is the perfect fit to continue the Warrior tennis tradition," Washington activities director Paul James remarked.

Howell becomes the eighth person to coach boys tennis at Washington in its 54-year history, following Meyer, Spencer Eells, Ron Capps, Jeff Warner, Randy Krejci, Lloyd Wilson and Frank Carthey.

Washington will hold its first meet of the season Saturday morning at Vets Tennis Center. It has been named the Dave Meyer Warrior Invitational in honor of the late coach.

Washington boys tennis coach David Meyer dies

David Meyer, the boys tennis coach at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, has died.

"It was last night or this morning," Paul James, Washington's activities director, said Saturday morning.

Meyer was a special education teacher at the school. His death apparently was sudden and unexpected.

"I just talked to him for 10 minutes yesterday," said Dennis Goettel, who previously served as Washington's activities director. "I hired him."

James and Goettel said Meyer was diabetic, but they did not know if that contributed to his death. "I'm not sure of any of the details," said James.

Meyer was starting his sixth year as Washington's boys tennis coach, according to James.

The Warriors are scheduled to open their season this Tuesday at Waterloo West.
