Metro wrestlers enjoy good start at state

DES MOINES - Metro wrestlers compiled a 22-15 record with eight pins on the opening day of the Class 3A state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Thursday.

The Prairie Hawks stand in fourth place in the team standings. All six of Prairie's wrestlers advanced to Friday's competition, with Marcus England (106), Sam Uthoff (120), Josh Wenger (138), Trey Blaha (152) and Skyler St. John (160) alive in the quarterfinals.

The Linn-Mar Lions are in fifth place, just a half-point behind Prairie. Alijah Jeffery (120), Damon Griffin (126), Ross Lembeck (152) and Andrew Holladay (195) reached the quarterfinals with opening-round victories.

Schuler, Dills post pins for Warriors

Trey Schuler and Dax Dills had two pins each, but their Washington Warriors were beaten twice Thursday in a double-dual wrestling meet at Washington.

The Warriors were beaten by Iowa City West, 69-12, and by Dubuque Senior, 42-39.

Washington forfeited at seven weights against Iowa City West, and six against Senior.

The Warriors held a three-point lead heading into the final match against Senior. A pin by the Rams' Dan Thoma provided the winning margin.

Dills, Burkle win twice for Warriors

DUBUQUE - Dax Dills and Tyler Burkle scored a pair of wins Thursday night for the Washington wrestling team.

The Warriors lost twice in an MVC double dual. Iowa City High topped Washington, 48-18, and Dubuque Hempstead took down the Warriors, 54-25.

Dills won a decision against City High and recorded a fall against Hempstead.

Burkle won by decision against City High and major decision against Hempstead.

Logan Sears and Trey Schuler had pins for the Warriors against Hempstead.

Burkle wins twice for Warriors

Tyler Burkle won a pair of matches Thursday night for Washington in a double dual wrestling meet at Linn-Mar.

The Warriors were pinned twice, losing to Waterloo West, 60-7, and Linn-Mar, 71-11.

Burkle and Trey Schuler won matches against West.

Burkle had a pin and Dax Dills a technical fall against Linn-Mar.

Kennedy matmen bump off Warriors

Kennedy defeated Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meet at Kennedy Thursday night, 42-21.

Both Metro teams lost to Dubuque Wahlert in the double-dual. The Cougars lost to the Golden Eagles, 33-31, and the Warriors fell to Wahlert, 57-10.

Austen Winders (145) collected a pin and a decision for Kennedy. Trey Schuler (132) had a major decision and a regular decision for Washington.

The double-dual was marred by forfeits.
