DAVENPORT — Assumption built a 12-point first-half lead and beat Xavier, 61-49, Tuesday night in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

J.T. Vonderhaar scored 16 points, Peter Finn 15 and Billy Daniel 13 for Assumption (5-1). The Knights are ranked fourth in Class 3A.

Kevin Hosch had 13 points and Carter Valentine added 10 for Xavier (1-5).

Iowa City West trounces Saints

Okey Uka poured in 20 points Friday night (Dec. 17) as Iowa City West defeated Xavier, 78-54, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball game at Xavier.

Carter Valentine led the Saints (1-4, 1-2) with 14 points. Dondre Alexander scored 13 points for Iowa City West (4-1, 2-1).

Matt Jenkins moved up quickly at Xavier

Matt Jenkins believes in thinking big. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be the boys basketball coach at Xavier today.

Jenkins was an assistant coach with the sophomore basketball team at Xavier two years ago when the varsity job came open. Remember, he was an assistant for the sophomore team, not even the boss of those 10th graders.

T.J. Sayre finally a full-fledged Hawkeye

IOWA CITY — The guys on T.J. Sayre’s intramural basketball team at the University of Iowa are out of luck this year.

He’s not eligible for IMs anymore.

Sayre is now an official member of the UI men’s basketball team, a fifth-year senior who hasn’t played organized ball since he graduated from Xavier in 2006. Last year intramurals, this year the Big Ten.

Mattke, Valentine lead Saints to win

IOWA CITY — The Xavier Saints did not have anyone score in double figures Tuesday night (Dec. 14), but it didn’t matter.

Mack Mattke and Carter Valentine notched nine points apiece as the Saints topped Iowa City High, 56-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Iowa City.
