No. 7 Saints escape Class 3A No. 7 Knights

DAVENPORT — Krissi Tow’s buzzer beater lifted Class 4A No. 7 Xavier past Class 3A No. 7 Assumption, 43-42, Tuesday night (Dec. 21) in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Emily Walvoord scored 12 points and Tow added 11. Xavier (9-1) won despite shooting only 14 of 28 from the free-throw line. The Saints nonetheless outscored Assumption by six points from the stripe.

The score was tied 21-21 at halftime and 32-32 after three quarters.

Xavier - Girls Basketball

No. 6 Iowa City West hands Saints 1st loss

IOWA CITY — The difference between No. 6 and No.7 was 15 points Friday night (Dec. 17).

Sixth-ranked Iowa City West handed seventh-ranked Xavier its first loss of the season, 53-38, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game in Iowa City.

Alex Saxen leads Saints to 7th straight win

Alex Saxen poured in 22 points Friday night (Dec. 10) as 10th-ranked Xavier clipped Kennedy, 54-39, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game at Xavier.

Emily Walvoord and Katlyn Andersen added nine points apiece as the Saints remained undefeated at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Xavier girls adjusting to life in Class 4A

Xavier High School clicked off state championships in girls’ basketball in 2003, 2005 and 2007, but those were the “old days” when the Saints played in the Class 3A tournament.

Xavier is a 4A school now. Life is harder.

“It’s a challenge. There’s no doubt about it,” Coach Tom Lilly said. “Right now, you’re going to see more Division-I type athletes in 4A, and you’re going to see more of them. You’re going to see more athletic types of kids who can play the game of basketball.”

Xavier - Girls Basketball

Washington, Xavier move up in 4A

Washington moved up one spot and Xavier three in this week’s Class 4A girls’ basketball poll released Dec. 16 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Washington (7-0) moved up to No. 5 and Xavier (8-0) advanced to No. 7.  The Warriors beat previous No. 6 Sioux City North and Class 3A defending state champ Sioux City Heelan last weekend.  Xavier knocked off previous No. 4 Iowa City High (6-2), 37-36, Tuesday night. The Little Hawks dropped to No. 10.
