The Xavier High School boys bowling team had a bright, shiny moment last year when Kyle Elliott qualified for the state tournament as just a sophomore.
On the down side, the Saints lost all 11 of their Mississippi Valley Conference meets last year.
"The guys unfortunately were not able to pull off any victories," Coach Russ Camacho remarked. "They had a couple of really close matches, but they couldn't quite close the deal last year."
Elliott gives the Saints a good place to start this season, but he's not the only one. Mitchell Huss, Ryan DeWit, Logan Buschette and Jason Beer also return. Many of the Saints have worked hard on their games by bowling in year-round leagues.
"We have some guys that bought into the stuff we were talking about, making sure you don't take the bowling ball and put it in the closet and then dust it off right before the season," Camacho said. "I think that's a huge benefit for them."
The lettermen need to keep improving, because there's a new kid on the team who could be pretty good. His name is Caleb Miller, and he's just a ninth grader.
"We have a freshman who has a lot of potential," Camacho said. "I think he's going to push the whole team.
"There's probably at least four or five guys that could ultimately be good enough to challenge for our No. 1 spot for the varsity. We're looking forward to that."
The Saints begin the season against Jefferson Tuesday afternoon at May City Bowl.
