Trcka helps Xavier girls nip J-Hawks

Defending state champion Tara Trcka rolled two strikes in her final frame Tuesday to help Xavier nip Jefferson by four pins in the season opener at May City Bowl by a count of 2487-2483.

Trcka's double in the final frame put the pressure on Jefferson's Courtney Moore to duplicate the feat and win the match for the J-Hawks. Moore, an all-conference performer, threw one strike but left the 7-pin on her next ball.

Trcka rolled a 478 series with games of 235 and 243. Nicole Petersen posted a 370 series for Jefferson and Moore had a 217 game.

JEFFERSON (2483): Laura Hemphill 168-302, Lindsey James 161-303, Jessie Alff 192-327, Nicole Petersen 190-370, Courtney Moore 217-355.

XAVIER (2487): Lisa Oberding 169-296, Abbey Konzen 183-311, Tyler Weger 152-294, Erica Fry 121-229, Tara Trcka 243-478.

First round - Jefferson 1657, Xavier 1608. Baker round - Xavier 879, Jefferson 826.

Trcka gives Saints a state champ to lean on

Tara Trcka won the Class 1A state bowling title last winter for Xavier High School with a clutch performance in the final game.

Here's more good news: Trcka won the state crown as a sophomore and has two more years to compete with the Saints.

"That's pretty exciting," Xavier Coach Russ Camacho remarked.

"She did a great job at the state meet, under tremendous pressure," he said. "For a sophomore to have to step up at the end of the third game like she did to win the state title was pretty awesome."

Trcka won the state crown by three pins by rolling a 248 in her final game. She clinched the championship in the 10th and final frame with clutch throws.

"She stepped up and threw some really, really good balls," Camacho said, "and before you know it she had a state title."

Trcka battled a hand injury late in the season, making her state title even more impressive. She rolled games of 236, 190 and 248 at the state meet for a 674 series.

Kari Brost, Abbey Konzen, Erica Fry and Tyler Weger return this season with Trcka. "Those are the main returnees we have," Camacho reported.

"I think overall we definitely have some improvement from last year," he said. "They're ahead of where they were at this point in the season last year. They're capable of performing well. They just have to do it."

Xavier finished with a 4-7 record in Mississippi Valley Conference meets last year and would like to move up. It helps having a state champion in the lineup.

Camacho thinks Trcka makes it easier on the rest on the team with her mere presence.

"It's an opportunity to have a very solid person to lean on," he said. "It's fortunate for them to have that anchor person there so they don't have to feel quite as much pressure. I think that's going to be the big thing."

The Saints open the season Tuesday afternoon against Cedar Rapids Jefferson at May City Bowl.

Tara Trcka wins state title

DES MOINES -- Xavier sophomore Tara Trcka rolled a 248 in her third game and won the Class 1A state bowling individual title Thursday at Plaza Lanes.

Trcka, who had battled a hand injury the last two weeks of the season, beat Dubuque Wahlert's Kristina Hochrein by three pins.  Wahlert won the 1A girls team title.

Western Dubuque won the boys team title and Red Oak's Taylor Mellott was the individual winner, rolling a 750 series.

Less than a week ago, Trcka's hand was so sore that she barely was able to qualify for the girls state bowling tournament.  She was one of the last players to make the field as an at-large entry after rolling a 388 in Saturday's regional tournament at May City Bowl.

But she had the line Thursday.

Trcka rolled a 236 game in the first round to take a four-pin lead over Hochrein and Creston's Taylor Hance.

Hance held a 23-pin lead over Hochrein after the second round, when Trcka slid to third place with a 190 that put her 31 pins back.

Trcka dueled Hance in the final game, beating her Mississippi Valley Conference foe by 11 pins, 248-237.  Hance, meanwhile, rolled a 197 and finished in third place, 20 pins behind Trcka.

Tara Trcka qualifies for state tourney

Xavier sophomore Tara Trcka has qualified for Thursday's Class 1A bowling meet, and the Linn-Mar girls have qualified as an at-large team for Class 2A meet Friday.

Trcka shot a 388 in Saturday's regional tournament at May City Lane. Her name was not on the list when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the names of qualifiers Saturday night, although her 388 was better than several of the scores that had been reported as at-large qualifiers. By Sunday, she was on the list.

Trcka is one of 16 qualifiers for the individual championship.  Hope Seyb of Keokuk had the top score in regionals with a 490.

Trcka's cousin, Allie Trcka of Cedar Rapids Jefferson, qualified for the Class 2A individual championship.

Linn-Mar finished third at the Class 2A regional at May City Bowl on Saturday. But both at-large teams to fill out the 10-team tournament field came from that regional. The Lions join regional champ Jefferson and second-place Muscatine in the 2A field.
