Feltes anchors Saints on wounded knees

Jamie Feltes suffered a torn ACL in her right knee when she was in the fifth grade and just 11 years old, an awfully young age for an athlete to begin fighting knee problems.

She suffered another torn ACL - this time in her left knee - in April of 2015, just a few months before her junior campaign with the Xavier High School softball team.

She did not have an operation either time, either for the partial tear in the fifth grade or the complete tear last year.

"Last season I decided to play because I didn't want to lose a whole season with it," she said Tuesday. "I have a history of knee problems, so I wasn't going to mess with it too much and I kind of let it go."

Feltes, now a senior and a rock at third base for the Saints, has been a starter for the varsity ever since she was in the eighth grade, balky knees or not. She was back at her post Tuesday night, although she was a little late for the opener against Waterloo East after attending an orientation session at the University of Iowa, where she plans to become a nurse.

Feltes and the Saints swept Waterloo East, 11-3 and 9-5, at Bob Erusha Field with Maria Steffen collecting the win in the first game and returning for a save in the nightcap.

Feltes owns a gold glove at third base with her quick reactions and strong throws, and she still runs well despite the braces on both of her knees. She scooted from home to second base in a flash when she belted a double off the left-field fence in the first game and made a series of fine defensive plays at the hot corner.

Xavier softball team rebounds against Jeff

A new day made a world of difference for the Xavier softball team Wednesday.

The Saints were drubbed by Jefferson, 17-4, in the first game of their Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader that began Tuesday night, but they rebounded for a 6-3 victory over the J-Hawks Wednesday in the rain-delayed twin-bill at Xavier.

Charlotte Richards and Steph Wehr belted home runs and had three RBIs for Xavier in the 6-3 victory. Keera Ball and Wehr had two hits and Ball scored two runs.

Maria Steffen tossed six shutout innings for the Saints before Jefferson rallied for three runs in the seventh inning.

Xavier raised its records to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the MVC. Jefferson, which is ranked No 5 in Class 5A, fell to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in the league.

Xavier softball beats Center Point

The Xavier softball team topped Center Point-Urbana, 10-1, in 4 1/2 innings Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Xavier.

The game was supposed to be part of the Jefferson tournament, but the teams decided to play at Xavier after the Jefferson tournament was canceled due to wet grounds.

Keera Ball went 2-for-3 with a single, double, walk and three runs for the Saints (1-4). Hannah Helms and Charlotte Richards were 2-for-3 with a single, double and three RBIs.

Jamie Feltes and Katie Langholz went 2-for-2. Ellie Malecek got the victory.

Center Point-Urbana is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A. Xavier is unranked in Class 4A.

Price is right for Xavier softball

Nikki Price must have an abundance of energy and patience.

She's the proud mother of an active 10-month-old baby boy, she teaches sixth and seventh graders at Oak Ridge Middle School and she coaches high school girls on the Xavier softball team.

That's a busy day for anyone.

Price welcomed her son, Braxton Michael, into the new world last July, just a few days after the Saints finished the 2015 season with a 24-16 record.

"We've been blessed," Price said before practice Wednesday. "He's super-fun and happy and crawling and talking and on the move all the time.

"He's a fun little guy and loves being outside, so he'll enjoy the summer, that's for sure. I'm ready for him to start sleeping through the night, but it's been good so far."

Price, entering her fourth official season as head coach, expects to enjoy the spring and summer with the Saints, despite the loss of Erin Drahozal and Morgan Breitbach to graduation. Drahozal hit .402 with nine homers and 32 RBIs and compiled a 9-7 record and 1.68 ERA as a pitcher, while Breitbach hit .358 and patrolled center field like a sponge.

"The energy level has been good, the workouts have been good," said Price. "They're working hard and getting better every day."

Maria Steffen, who went 9-5 with a 2.47 ERA last season as a freshman, tops the pitching staff. "She's gotten mentally tougher over the winter," said Price, who expects Steffen to be a leader as a sophomore.

Ellie Malecek (2-0, 1.45) enters the season as the No. 2 starter as the Saints prepare for the opener at Iowa City West on Tuesday.

Price is confident the left side of the infield will be in good shape again with senior Jamie Feltes (.275) at third base and junior Hannah Helms (.331) at shortstop. Price likes their leadership and communication skills.

Other top returning players are outfielder Charlotte Richards (.414), second baseman/outfielder Kailee Becker (.263), Cassie Himmelsbach (.260), catcher Steph Wehr (.228), second baseman/outfielder Keera Ball (.533 in limited duty), Maddie Morgan and Hannah Williams. Price expects a few younger players to enter the mix as well.
