Drahozal commits to Upper Iowa

Erin Drahozal of Xavier High School has committed to play softball at Upper Iowa University.

Drahozal informed UIU Coach Amanda Bradberry of her decision Tuesday night.

Drahozal hit .492 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs for the Saints this past season. She also excelled as a pitcher with a 19-4 record, 1.97 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 146 innings.

Drahozal was named first team all-state in Class 4A for the 2014 campaign when Xavier compiled a 33-7 record.

Drahozal has been playing varsity softball for the Saints since she was an eighth grader. She is a career .387 hitter (172 of 445) with 25 homers and 162 RBIs.

She has compiled a 65-23 record as a pitcher with 253 strikeouts.

Upper Iowa University finished 21-28 overall and 13-13 in the Northern Sun Conference last season. The Peacocks are an NCAA Division II college.

Sommer tops All-Metro softball team

Katie Sommer spent only year on the Linn-Mar High School softball team after moving here from Dubuque, but she made the most of it.

Sommer hit a sizzling .617 for the Lions this season, stole 57 bases, averaged two hits per game and displayed amazing skills at shortstop.

The Metro softball coaches honored Sommer Monday by naming her the Athlete of the Year on the All-Metro Softball Team.

Nikki Price of Xavier and her assistant coaches were named the Staff of the Year.

The Jefferson J-Hawks, who have qualified for the Class 5A state tournament, led the All-Metro team with three first-team selections with Maddie Hansen, Alyssa Olson and Erin Kuba.

Erin Drahozal and Hayley Deutmeyer were honored on the first team from Xavier. Jessi Puk and Bria Lenten made the top honor squad from

Washington. Gabi Carter and Natalie Rumer were named from Prairie. Sommer and Maddy Ryan were selected from Linn-Mar. Haley Vanourney from Marion High School also made the first team.

Katie Sommer honored in MVC softball

Linn-Mar senior Katie Sommer has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division on the Mississippi Valley Conference all-star softball teams.

Nikki Price and her assistants were named the Staff of the Year in the Valley Division after winning the division title.

Xavier, Linn-Mar and Prairie claimed three spots apiece on the Valley Division first team.

Pitcher Erin Drahozal, infielder Hayley Deutmeyer and outfielder Courtney Colston made the squad from Xavier. Pitcher Maddy Ryan, infielder Katie Sommer and outfielder Elison Ollinger made the team from Linn-Mar. Catcher Natalie Rumer, infielder Gabi Carter and outfielder Halle Lueck were named from Prairie.

Bria Lenten of Washington was a first-team pick in the Valley Division as a utility player.

The Jefferson J-Hawks landed three berths on the Mississippi Division first team with pitcher Alyssa Olson, catcher Maddie Hansen and infielder Erin Kuba. Kennedy claimed two spots with infielder Ashley Hamilton and outfielder Tianna Drahn.

No.5 Saints, No.9 Lions knocked out

The Xavier Saints and Linn-Mar Lions were both upset in the semifinals of the regional softball tournament Saturday night at home.

The Saints, ranked No.5 in Class 4A, were blanked by Clear Creek-Amana, 2-0, on a three-hit shutout by Lexi Kinnaird.

The Lions, ranked No.9 in Class 5A, were upended by Dubuque Senior, 2-0, on a three-hit shutout by A.D. Medinger.

Cedar Rapids Prairie's game in the Class 5A playoffs against No.7 Pleasant Valley was suspended by rain in the second inning with the Hawks leading, 2-0. It will be resumed Monday at 6 p.m. at Prairie.

Prairie pops back into softball rankings

Cedar Rapids Prairie returned to the Class 5A softball rankings Thursday in the No. 10 spot, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Hawks were ranked 8th, 9th or 10th in the first four polls this season before dropping out last week.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson dropped two spots to No. 6 in Class 5A. The Xavier Saints remained fifth in the Class 4A rankings.

Johnston is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and Dallas Center-Grimes is No. 1 in Class 4A.
