Saints, Kennedy struggle in Xavier Invitational

Freshman Molly Breitbach was the bright spot for the host Saints in an otherwise poor showing for the Saints at the Xavier Invitational.

Breitbach won the 100 meter dash, was a part of the winning 4x200 relay, and was on the sprint medley that took second Friday at Xavier.

“She’s a hard worker, she will do whatever she is asked,” Xavier Coach Russ Camacho said. “There is not much more you can ask from her.”

As a team, the Saints struggled as their guests were more than willing to beat up on them all night. The Saints finished tied with Kennedy for last with 54 points.

“There were some highlights tonight and some things we need to work on,” Camacho said.

Kennedy joined the Saints to represent the Metro area at the invitational. The Cougars also struggled to keep up with the competition.

Kristin Huebsch got the Cougars their only first place finish by winning the high jump with a mark of 4-feet-10.

Cedar Falls won with 171.5 points and Benton placed second with 106 points.

Xavier next runs Tuesday (April 5) at the GTR Women of Troy Relays at Iowa City West. Kennedy also is in the meet.

Busy Camacho coaches boys and girls at Xavier

Whoever invented the 24-hour day wasn't thinking kindly of Russ Camacho, who might be the busiest coach in town.

Camacho coaches five teams and more than 200 student-athletes at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School.

He's the head coach for the sophomore football team (about 40 players), the head coach for boys bowling and girls bowling (about 40 athletes) and the head coach for boys track and girls track (about 125 people).

He teaches general science and chemistry at Xavier, makes the round trip every day from his home in North Liberty and has two young sons.

No, 24 hours are not enough some days. Thirty hours might be better. "That would be nice," he said this week.

How does he find the time for everything? "That's a good question," he remarked. "There's not enough, sometimes."
