Busswitz leads Prairie spikers past Saints

Kate Busswitz had 13 kills and five ace serves to lead Prairie to a 14-25, 25-10, 25-11, 25-22 Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball win over visiting Xavier on Tuesday night.

Megan Spengeler added seven kills for the Hawks. Jenni Lockhart had 13 digs while Mallory Jones and Kendra Gaskill had 18 and 12 assists respectively.

For the Saints, Kayla Torson had 13 digs, nine kills and three blocks. Madsy Richards had 17 digs, eight kills and a pair of blocks.

Marion ranked 4th in volleyball poll

The Marion Indians have been ranked fourth in the Class 4A preseason volleyball poll, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Monday.

Marion finished with a 25-16 record last season.

The Xavier Saints are ranked No. 10 in Class 4A. The Linn-Mar Lions are ranked No. 9 in Class 5A.

Harlan grabbed the No. 1 spot in the 4A rankings. Ankeny Centennial was voted No. 1 in Class 5A.

The other top-ranked clubs are Holy Trinity in Class 1A, Dike-New Hartford in Class 2A and Solon in Class 3A.

Bailey named Xavier volleyball coach

Katie Bailey did not have to wait very long to land her first job after graduating from St. Ambrose University this spring.

Bailey has been named the new volleyball coach at Xavier High School and will teach English at Regis Middle School with the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Bailey played volleyball at St. Ambrose for four years and served as a team captain during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. She was named Academic All-Conference for three years and was chosen as the NAIA "Champion of Character" for the 2013 volleyball season.

"Katie is an outstanding person and will provide enthusiasm, energy and excitement to the Xavier volleyball program," said Xavier activities director Mike Winker. "She will be a positive role model and dynamic leader for our volleyball athletes."

Johnson resigns as Xavier volleyball coach

Krista Johnson has resigned as the head volleyball coach at Xavier High School after one season, activities director Mike Winker announced Wednesday morning.

Johnson led Xavier to the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 6-0 record last fall. The Saints finished 28-11 overall and reached the Class 4A regional finals.

Winker said the search for a new coach will begin immediately.

Ollinger, Torson make all-state volleyball

Amanda Ollinger of Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Kayla Torson of Xavier have been named to the Des Moines Register all-state volleyball teams.

Ollinger, a sophomore, made second team all-state in Class 5A as an outside hitter. She led Class 5A in kills with 654 and helped the J-Hawks finish 19-22 and reach the regional finals.

Torson, a junior, made second team all-state in Class 4A as an outside hitter. She finished seventh in Class 4A in kills with 379 and helped the Saints finish 28-11 and reach the regional finals.
