Saints seventh at Linn-Mar Duals

Josh Pederson, a 140-pound Linn-Mar Lion, has never bowled a perfect 300 game. But Saturday at the Lion Invitational, he wrestled one.

Pederson separated himself from the entire field by pinning all five of his opponents, including a buzzer-beater in the finals in 5:57 to lead the Linn-Mar Lions over the Bobcats of Western Dubuque, 55-18.

Xavier finished seventh in the eight-team field and had three undefeated wrestlers in Nick Drahozal (112), Braxton Chicchelly (130) and Peter Ickes (171).

Ickes (21-3) credits this year’s big improvement to taking a more serious approach to the sport and eliminating distraction.  “I’m happy with today but not content – I really want to get better and make it to state,” he said.

Schuler, Warriors pin Saints

You don't have to be a big, muscular guy to enjoy high school sports. Just take a look at Trey Schuler, all 103 pounds of him.

Schuler, a freshman at Washington High School, played football this fall for the Warriors and plans to participate in track and baseball as the year goes along. Right now, he packs a punch for the Warriors at the lightest weight on the wrestling team.

Schuler pinned Jerry Duball of Xavier in 4:48 Thursday night to help Washington beat the Saints, 42-27, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Washington.

Chicchelly has big night for Saints

Braxton Chicchelly has participated in football, wrestling, soccer, track, baseball, choir, show choir and key club during his four years at Xavier High School.

This 130-pound dynamo believes in keeping busy.

“I’m trying to keep myself well-rounded so I can never say I have an excuse to get out of shape,” he said Thursday night. “I love doing sports, and sports are my passion.”

Chicchelly had a busy night Thursday (Dec. 16) during a double-dual wrestling meet against Iowa City High and Prairie at the Xavier gym. Busy and impressive.
