Chicchelly aims high for Xavier wrestlers

Braxton Chicchelly set a series of goals for himself when he joined the Xavier wrestling team as a freshman.

He wanted to go undefeated as a freshman for the junior varsity, qualify for the state tournament as sophomore, place at the state meet as a junior and win a state title as a senior.

Let’s get an update.

He went 21-1 as a freshman for the JV squad, made the state tournament as a sophomore and placed seventh at state as a junior.

Nick Drahozal gets 2 pins for Saints

CEDAR FALLS — Nick Drahozal collected two pins for the Xavier wrestling team Thursday night (Dec. 9) in a double-dual at Cedar Falls.

Drahozal (125) stuck Jamie Medina of Waterloo West in 1:11, and flattened Trey Hess Thomas of Cedar Falls in 3:26.

Braxton Chicchelly (135), Peter Ickes (189) and Chantz Rodriguez (heavyweight) also were double-winners for the Saints. Ickes pinned Stratton Yant of Cedar Falls in 36 seconds.

Xavier lost to Waterloo West,45-29, and was trimmed by Cedar Falls, 39-33.

Chicchelly wins Indee crown

INDEPENDENCE — Xavier’s Braxton Chicchelly won the 135-pound title to lead the Saints to a fifth-place finish in the nine-team tournament Dec. 4 at the Independence Invitational.

Prairie crowned six champions and nipped Osage by one-half point to win the team title.

Xavier had two second places, Nick Drahozal at 125 and Peter Ickes at 189.

Saints routed twice

Linn-Mar freshman Ross Lembeck upset sixth-ranked and returning state qualifier Braxton Chicchelly from Xavier to key the Lions' 56-6 rout of the Saints on Dec. 2. Xavier also was rocked by Iowa City West, 65-6.

Chicchelly upset Iowa City West's second-ranked Grady Gambrall, 4-3, earlier in the Saints' meet with the Trojans. Chantz Rodriguez scored an 8-7 win at heavyweight to account for Xavier's other win.

Rodriguez also beat Linn-Mar's A.J. Feldman, 7-4. The Saints other win came when Peter Ickes beat Mark Atwater, 3-2, at 189.
