Hembera breaks Metro record with 48

WINTHROP - Shelby Hembera added another chapter to her remarkable basketball career for Cedar Valley Christian Friday night.

Hembera poured in a career-high 48 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Huskies spanked East Buchanan, 62-46, in a Tri-Rivers Conference game in Winthrop.

The 48 points set a Metro record for most points in a single contest in 5-on-5 basketball. Anne O'Neil of Kennedy scored 44 in a game in 2000 and Hembera notched 44 in a game last season.

Hembera shot 21-for-30 from the field and was 6-for-9 at the foul line. She might have scored 50 points, but the 6-foot senior was called for traveling late in the game.

Freshman Molly Hembera scored 12 points for Cedar Valley Christian, which means the Hembera sisters combined for 60 of their team's 62 points. Shelby Hembera personally outscored the entire East Buchanan team, 48-46, despite being hounded by extra defenders all night.
