Girl nets goal for Cedar Valley soccer

DUBUQUE -- Freshman Izzy Hoffman became the first female member of the Cedar Valley Christian boys soccer team to score a goal Monday when the Huskies beat Bellevue Marquette, 3-1, at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.

Hoffman is one of five girls on the Cedar Valley team. They play on the boys team because there were not enough girls interested in playing soccer to field a team in that gender. Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) rules allow girls to play on boys teams.

Alex Kennedy's 25-yard chip off a free kick beat the Marquette keeper for Cedar Valley's first goal. It came in the 34th minute.

Two minutes later, Jon Landis played the ball to Hoffman, who buried it into the back of the net.

Landis' pass to Arturo Melendez produced another goal in the 42nd minute that gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Shalene Hagrty narrowed the gap for Marquette with a goal in the 66th minute.

CVC keeper Brandon Fields saved three shots on goal, Defenders David Sperling and Will Muhlbach each had one save.

Cedar Valley improved to 5-2.
