Eagle women pound Grand View JV

The Kirkwood women's basketball team started thinking about that good home-cooking on Tuesday against Grand View JV, but shook off the holiday yips for a big 76-38 win in Johnson Hall.

"That's what started happening," freshman post Hanna Haynes said. "At halftime, we thought, we have 20 more minutes, then we can go home."

It may have started a little sooner for Kirkwood (7-1). The Eagles blitzed the JV Vikings, racing out to a 32-8 lead.

Mikayla Fallon had two 3-pointers and Kirsten Larson and Taylor Silva each added their own during that early run. Kirkwood finished 6-of-21 from 3-point range (28.6 percent).

KCC women upset No.2 Illinois Central

The Kirkwood women's basketball team is nowhere to be found in the national rankings right now, but that's going to change.

The Eagles bumped off No.2 Illinois Central, 70-59, Saturday afternoon for their third victory over a top-10 team this year.

Kirkwood also has tamed No.6 Kishwaukee College and No.9 Owens Community College during its hot 6-0 start. "We can't ask for anything more,"  Coach Kim Muhl acknowledged.

Danielle Woolfolk, a 5-foot-3 point guard from Chicago, led the Eagles with 21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and only one turnover in 32 minutes.

Kirkwood women down Parkland

The crowd was expecting that signature spurt that Kirkwood puts on its opponents to put the game away, but it never came.

Still, the Eagles persevered Friday night at Johnson Hall, downing Parkland, 76-63, behind Tyra Polite's 21 points off the bench.

Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl explained the Eagles' effort.

“You’ve got to have energy to spurt,” said Muhl. “We had very minimal energy on the court tonight.

KCC women bump off No.6 Kishwaukee

It was a brutal, horrible, not-very-good opening 10 minutes for the Kirkwood women's basketball team, but the Eagles adjusted and upset No. 6 Kishwaukee College, 67-45, in the 2013 Clarion-Kirkwood Classic Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hall.

"I just didn't think we were ready to go to war, we were playing scared," Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl said. "We're going to struggle offensively because we're young, and we just don't know how to play with each other yet.

"But I thought our effort defense would win the game. And it did."

Kirkwood (4-0) played tight defense and held Kishwaukee's top players to a combined 7-for-32 shooting (22 percent). Tami Morice led the Kougars with nine points.
