Biehl & Prior: Beware of Sluggers!

Lexie Biehl and Brooke Prior blend in with all the other students at Kirkwood Community College, attending classes and working toward a degree like everyone else.

Biehl is about 5-foot-3. Prior stands 5-foot-6.

"Not very big," Prior noted with a smile.

But when the two sophomores step on a softball field, they become giant-sized sluggers for the 10th-ranked Eagles. Biehl leads all junior college players at the Division II level with 22 homers this season. Prior ranks fourth with 18.

As a team, Kirkwood leads the nation with 101 home runs in 46 games. It's one of the big reasons they won the ICCAC Conference title with a 23-1 record and why the 10th-ranked Eagles have an excellent chance of making the national tournament.

Eagles overpower DMACC for league title

The Kirkwood Eagles hosted DMACC in a showdown for the conference softball title Monday, but the Eagles had different ideas.

It wasn't a showdown. It was a showcase.

The Eagles belted eight home runs and drubbed DMACC in a doubleheader, 9-1 and 12-2, on a wet, blustery day at the Kirkwood diamond to grab the league title with overwhelming power.

"They were ready," said Kirkwood Coach Joe Yegge, who claimed his sixth conference title in eight years at the school. "They've been talking about these games for the last week."

Kirkwood is ranked No. 10 in the Division II ranks of junior college softball and DMACC is ranked fifth, but this was a mismatch of major dimensions. Both games ended early due to the eight-run mercy rule as the Eagles showed no mercy all day.
