No.5 Kirkwood softball team ready to go

The Kirkwood softball team won 50 straight games last season and reached the semifinals of the national tournament, but graduation and two early departures have left the Eagles with a vastly different club this year.

The expectations remain as high as ever, however, as the fifth-ranked Eagles get ready to open the 2014 season at the St. Ambrose indoor tournament Saturday.

"I think we're biting at the bit to go," said Coach Joe Yegge.

Yegge knew he'd lose a good chunk of his lineup to graduation, but All-American pitcher Amber Logemann and all-star shortstop Leah Duffe both left Kirkwood after their freshman campaigns to play at a four-year school.

Kirkwood signs 11 new softball players

Joe Yegge digs the long ball, but he also likes softball players who can run.

The Kirkwood coaching staff will be joined by guest coaches from Alabama, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, Bowling Green, Northern State and Wichita State. Current and former Kirkwood players also will assist.

Brochures are available in the Kirkwood athletic offices at Johnson Hall. Kirkwood softball coach Joe Yegge may be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Belz will pitch for UNI softball

Samantha Belz was interested in attending the University of Northern Iowa when she was a high school student at Davenport West, but it didn't work out then.

Now it has.

Belz, currently a sophomore at Kirkwood Community College, signed a national letter-of-intent Wednesday to join the UNI softball program for the 2014-15 school year.

"It feels good, knowing where I'm going and that I'm going to a good program," she said.
