Coe baseball team shipped to La Crosse

The Coe College baseball team has been assigned to the Midwest Regional in La Crosse, Wis., for the NCAA Division III baseball tournament this week.

Coe (31-12) will face St. John's of Minnesota (26-14) in the opening round Wednesday at 10 a.m. Coe is seeded No. 5 in the regional and St. John's is seeded No. 4.

The Kohawks secured an automatic spot in the playoffs by winning the Iowa Conference tournament Saturday. This is the sixth trip to the NCAA tournament in school history and the fourth under Coach Steve Cook since 2006.

Coe will compete in an eight-team regional with Concordia-Chicago, Ripon, St. John's, St. Scholastica, Washington University, Wisconsin- La Crosse and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Wisconsin-Whitewater is the defending national champion and the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional. Coe and Whitewater could meet in the second round Thursday.

St. John's won the MIAC tournament to make the regional.

The Wartburg Knights, who lost to Coe in the championship game of the Iowa Conference tournament, received an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament and have been assigned to the Central Regional at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.

Wartburg, located in Waverly, had already been designated as the host school for the Central Regional before the Iowa Conference tournament was held.

Fifty-six teams were selected for the NCAA Division III playoffs. There are eight regionals around the country. Four of the regionals have eight teams and four regionals have six teams.

There are six teams in the Central Regional in Waverly, compared to eight teams in the Midwest Regional in La Crosse. All of the regionals are double-elimination.

Forty conference champions made the tournament, along with 16 at-large selections.

The eight regional champions will advance to the NCAA Division III finals May 22-27 in at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis.

Coe wins IIAC tourney, earns NCAA berth

Alec Zwanziger felt like crawling in a hole and hiding after he had a rough inning on defense in the Iowa Conference tournament Saturday, but it's hard to disappear in the middle of a minor league ballpark when everybody is looking at you.

Instead of hiding, Zwanziger and the Coe baseball team bounced back like champions.

The Kohawks overcame a rough start and dumped Wartburg, 12-7, in the championship game of the IIAC tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium to earn the league's automatic in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Zwanziger mishandled three straight chances at second base in the second inning. Only one of the plays was ruled an error, but he could have made all three plays.

Wartburg took advantage of the extra outs when Jackson Litterer belted a grand slam to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.

"I'll tell you what, I wasn't feeling too great," Zwanziger acknowledged. "I think that was pretty obvious. But that's what this season has been all about. We're fighters."

Coe whips Wartburg, eyes IIAC title

Steve Cook strode to the mound in the sixth inning Friday with a plan that might have been stolen from the Little League coaches manual.

It was time for a pitching change, but that's not all.

"AJ," the Coe coach began when he got the mound. "It's time for you to stop pitching and go play first base. Nice job, son.

"Jory, you switch from first base to third base. Remember to change gloves. Cole, you move from third base to right field. And Jack, you come in from right field and pitch.

"OK, fellas? And after the game we'll go for ice cream."

It may have looked like a Little League game, but it had big-time results (we're not sure about the ice cream).

All the maneuvers helped Coe whip Wartburg, 6-3, in the winners bracket final of the Iowa Conference tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Coe (29-12) is back in action Friday at 1 p.m. against top seed Wartburg, a 7-6 winner over Luther in the late game on Thursday night.

The Kohawks jumped ahead in the first as senior Michael Goerdt tripled to right center and scored on AJ Reuter’s double to right.

Coe broke the game open with four runs in the third Jory Heckenberg’s two-run single, plating Goert and Reuter, was the big hit in the inning. The Kohawks made it 7-0 with two more runs in the sixth.

Coe, Dubuque penalized for bench-clearing event

Members of the Coe College and University of Dubuque baseball programs have been penalized for their roles in a bench-clearing incident that took place during an Iowa Conference doubleheader April 26 in Dubuque.

Dubuque assistant coach Eric Munson, who played nine years in the Major Leagues, was suspended for four games for shoving Coe head coach Steve Cook. Coe freshman Tom Simon was suspended for four games for shoving a Dubuque player.

Coe assistant coach Jay Whannel was suspended for one game for arguing with an umpire. In addition, Whannel will not be allowed to coach first base when the Kohawks play their first game in the Iowa Conference tournament Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Chuck Yrigoyen, the commissioner of the Iowa Conference, outlined the disciplinary action Monday in an interview with the Metro Sports Report. He said Munson and Simon were suspended for "fighting," according to NCAA rules, but Yrigoyen said no punches were thrown by anyone in the incident, according to his investigation.
