Kohawks bump off No. 23 Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Jake Timm pumped in 21 points Friday night as the Coe men's basketball team knocked off No. 23 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 75-70, at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh.

Timm gave the Kohawks a 67-66 lead with a 3-pointer with 2:11 left in the game. Oshkosh tied the score, 67-67, with a free throw with 1:51 remaining, but Trevor Haaland gave Coe the lead for good at 70-67 with a 3-point play with 1:32 to go.

Shedeck sparks Kohawks past Rams

Marshall Shedeck spent most of last season on the bench for the Coe College basketball team as an understudy to an all-conference performer and produced very modest numbers.

What a difference a year has made.

Shedeck made his first start Tuesday night and stuffed the stat sheet as the Kohawks defeated Cornell, 80-65, at Eby Fieldhouse for their eighth straight victory over the Rams.

Kohawks hope to take next step in hoops

The Coe men's basketball team ended last season with Jake Timm on the bench with a sprained ankle against Dubuque in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks lost that game without their star point guard on the floor, but now Timm and the Kohawks have turned the page and are hoping to improve upon last year's 16-10 campaign and win the league.

Coe begins the new season Tuesday night with a doubleheader against Cornell at Eby Fieldhouse. The Coe and Cornell women play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.

Timm averaged 11.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season and could play an even bigger role this year with the graduation losses of JT Vonderhaar (14.3 ppg), Matt Daoust (13.0) and sharpshooter Max Schmarzo (9.5).

Coach Bryan Martin is counting on his three seniors - Timm, Christian Fahey and Lincoln Vorba - to set the tone as the Kohawks get started.

Coe inducting 4 into Hall of Fame

Coe College will induct four new members into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame next weekend.

Peggy Schmitt Goerdt, Rajesh Venkatraman, Chris Weih and Bob Timmons will be honored at the 43rd Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 16 and will be featured before Coe's football game against Simpson on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Goerdt (1990) left a lasting mark on the Coe softball program. Her 11 triples as a freshman still stands as the school record. She was named a second team All-American in 1990 at first base and her 40 RBIs stood as a single-season Coe record for a decade.

Goerdt's 23 career triples are still a school record and she graduated with a school-record 106 RBIs, which now ranks sixth in school history.

Martin tabs connections for new Kohawks

Bryan Martin has made a lot of good connections during his basketball career as a player and coach at seven different colleges.

It's paid off with a handsome recruiting class at Coe.

Martin has brought in 11 new players for the Kohawks and four of them came through his connections with his former coaches and former players through the years.

Take Zach Schlabaugh of Williamsburg. Schlabaugh's father, Dave, recruited Martin to play college basketball at Morningside. Now Martin has recruited Schlabaugh's son to play for him at Coe.

"We've kind of come full cycle there," said Martin.

Take Will Reichelt, a 6-foot-6 player from Pocatello, Idaho. One of Reichelt's coaches in school was a student manager at Indian Hills when Martin worked at that junior college.
