No. 9 Kohawks sweep Westminster

The ninth-ranked Coe softball team swept a twinbill from Westminster Wednesday at Clark Field, 6-2 and 6-1.

The Kohawks (28-5) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to snap a 2-2 tie in the opener. Abby Flannagan socked a two-run home run in the inning, her fifth roundtripper of the season.

Flannagan and Brianna Gardner both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game. Maddison Woodruff (16-2) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and allowed one earned run.

Gardner and Haley Smith had two hits for Coe in the second game. Arran Weeces (10-2) pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and allowed one earned run.

Westminster's record fell to 11-19.

Flannagan belts 2 game-winning homers

Most ballplayers dream about hitting a game-winning home run for their team.

Abby Flannagan did it twice Wednesday.

Coe swept Simpson, 1-0 and 2-1 in 10 innings, thanks to Flannagan's clutch hitting and outstanding pitching by Maddison Woodruff and Arran Weeces.

The first game was tied, 0-0, in the bottom of the sixth inning when Flannagan socked her third homer of the season for a 1-0 lead. Woodruff put the finishing touches on her one-hitter in the top of the seventh for the 1-0 triumph.

The second game was tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the 10th inning when Flannagan delivered again for a walk-off victory with her fourth homer of the year.

Nicole Gentile kept Coe alive in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game with a solo homer to tie the game, 1-1, and force extra innings.

Woodruff struck out nine batters and walked two during her one-hitter in the opener. Weeces pitched the first nine innings of the nightcap and allowed one run with 11 strikeouts.

Woodruff pitched the top of the 10th inning and got the victory when Flannagan connected in the bottom of the 10th, raising Woodruff's record to 15-1.

Coe raised its records to 26-3 overall and 6-0 in the Iowa Conference. Simpson fell to 16-12 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Coe's Reuter, Woodruff earn honors

AJ Reuter and Maddison Woodruff of Coe received top honors from the Iowa Conference Monday.

Reuter was named the Athlete of the Week among Iowa Conference baseball players after going 11-for-19 as a batter for a .579 average and 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA as a pitcher as the Kohawks compiled a 4-2 record. He drove in 10 runs in those six games.

Woodruff was named the Iowa Conference Pitcher of the Week in softball after going 3-0 with three complete games and 35 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

Five Coe athletes received special mention from the league with Melissa Alger (track and field), Erik Franklin (track and field), Noah Sprinkel (tennis), Nicole Gentile (softball) and Michael Golinski (baseball) all saluted.

No.12 Kohawks sweep Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT —  Coe pitchers Maddison Woodruff and Arran Weeces did not allow any earned runs Sunday as the 12th-ranked Kohawks swept a non-conference doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan, 11-3 and 9-0, in Mount Pleasant.

Woodruff (13-1) struck out 13 batters in the opener. All three of Iowa Wesleyan's runs in that game were unearned.

Weeces (9-1) tossed a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in the second contest.

Nicole Gentile, McCall Meade and Emily Grell hit home runs for Coe in the first game. Gentile was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Meade was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Brianna Gardner went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Abby Flannagan was 2-for-5 with a double and triple. Mallory McArtor was 2-for-4.

Gardner went 3-for-4 in the second game with two RBIs, two runs scored and a triple. Gentile went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Haley Smith was 2-for-3.

Coe raised its record to 24-3 overall. Iowa Wesleyan fell to 10-12.

Coe softball team sweeps Dubuque

DUBUQUE — Maddison Woodruff and Arran Weeces tossed four-hitters Saturday as the Coe softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Dubuque in Dubuque.

Woodruff (12-1) pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts in a 3-2 victory in the first game, then Weeces followed suit with another four-hitter with five strikeouts in a 4-1 triumph in the second contest.

Danielle Schlotterbeck drove in two runs for the Kohawks (22-3, 4-0) in the first game. Nicole Gentile scored twice and Abby Flannagan was 2-for-4.

Schlotterbeck went 2-for-4 in the second game and Gentile scored two more runs.

Dubuque fell to 15-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
