Morgan Meese will run for Kohawks

Morgan Meese of Cedar Rapids Jefferson plans to continue her successful track career at Coe College next year.

Meese is a member of the championship relay teams at Jefferson. The J-Hawks won the 4x200 relay and the 4x100 relay at the Drake Relays this year. They broke the Iowa all-time record in the 4x200 and matched the all-time record in the 4x100.

Meese helped Jefferson win the 4x200 relay at the state meet last year.

 

Coe - Women's Track

Mosbach wins 2 events at Loras Open

DUBUQUE - Liz Mosbach of Mount Mercy won two events at the Dr. Tucker Loras Open track meet Saturday in Dubuque.

Mosbach captured the 800 in 2:20.39 and claimed the long jump at 17-9 3/4. Jade Gridiron won the 100 meter dash for the Mustangs in 12.66 seconds.

Coe won four events at the meet. Erik Franklin took the 200 (22.12), Beau Freeborn captured the 800 (1:56.32) and Chris Hawkins won the long jump (22-7 1/4) for the Coe men. Melissa Alger took the discus (149-5) for the Coe women.

Alger, Utley honored by Iowa Conference

Melissa Alger of Coe and DJ Utley of Wartburg were honored Monday by the Iowa Conference for their work last week.

Alger was named the Performer of the Week for track and field for her performances at the Cornell Invitational, where she placed second in the discus (147-5) and fifth in the shot put (37-9). Her discus throws ranks third in the nation in NCAA Division III.

Utley, a Cedar Rapids Prairie grad, was named the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week for his work with the Wartburg baseball team. He hit .500 (10 for 20) last week with nine RBIs as the Knights compiled a 4-2 record in six games.

Freeborn, Alger win titles for Kohawks

ST. LOUIS - Beau Freeborn and Melissa Alger won individual titles for the Coe track teams at the Washington University Invitational Saturday in St. Louis.

Freeborn captured the 800 meter run in 1 minute, 56.03 seconds. Alger took the discus crown with a toss of 146 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Chris Hawkins placed fourth in the long jump for the Kohawks at 21 feet, 8 inches. Jacob Hayes placed sixth in the discus (134-11 1/2), Robbie Peters was seventh in the discus (131-9), Austin Springsteen was seventh in the 1500 (4:05.61), Erik Franklin finished seventh in the 400 (51.05) and Franklin was eighth in the 200 (22.59). Coe finished fifth in the 4x400 relay (3:25.31).

Sammie Osterberger placed third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.12) and finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.53) for the Coe women's team. Amanda Skarban was fifth in the discus (118-7).

Both of Coe's track teams finished ninth in the team standings. There were 26 teams in the women's competition and 27 teams in the men's competition.

Coe's Hawkins takes 2nd in triple jump

WAVERLY - Chris Hawkins of Coe placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet at the Iowa Conference indoor track meet in Waverly Saturday.

Hawkins also finished third in the 60 hurdles in 8.45 seconds. Erik Franklin of Coe finished third in the triple jump at 43 feet, 9 inches.

Kenzie Drahn placed third in the triple jump for the Coe women at 35 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

The Kohawks placed fifth in the men's standings and sixth in the women's standings. Central and Wartburg tied for the men's title. Wartburg claimed the women's championship.
