Coe's Alger honored by Iowa Conference

Melissa Alger of Coe College has been named the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week in women's track, the league announced Monday.

Alger, a sophomore from Lisbon, won the discus competition at the Washington-St. Louis Invitational with a throw of 149 feet, 6 inches.

Her throw was nearly seven feet better than a field made up of NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA competitors and is also tops in Division III to date, nearly three feet further than the second-best throw.

Alger's toss was just four inches shy of the school record.

Nicole Gentile of Coe received Special Mention from the Iowa Conference in softball. Michael Janssen of Coe received Special Mention in tennis.

Coe's Alger wins discus in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - Coe College sophomore Melissa Alger won the discus competition at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis Saturday.

Alger had a winning toss of 149 feet, 6 inches. She captured the event by nearly seven feet against throwers from 29 other colleges.

Alger scored 10 points for the Kohawks, which helped them place 18th in the team standings.

The Coe men finished 11th in the 4x400 relay to score their only point in the two-day meet.

Coe triple jumpers place 3rd

DECORAH - Kenzie Drahn and Erik Franklin placed third in the triple jump for the Coe College track teams Saturday at the Iowa Conference indoor meet in Decorah.

Drahn finished third in the women's triple jump at 35 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Franklin claimed third in the men's triple jump at 44 feet, 1 1/4 inch.

The Kohawks placed third in the 4x800 relay in 8:02.07 with Beau Freeborn, Joshua Randall, Jon Ameling and Austin Springsteen sharing the baton.

Coe - Women's Track

Coe track teams place 2nd in 4 events

WAVERLY - The Coe College track teams placed second in four events at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly Saturday.

Laura Bybee finished second in the pole vault, Kenzie Drahn was second in the triple jump and Sara Bechard tied for second in the high jump for the Coe women. Beau Freeborn finished second in the 800 for the Coe men in 1:58.23.

The Coe women picked up fifth-place finishes from Bechard in the 200 (27.31), Sammie Osterberger in the 60 hurdles (9.54) and the 4x400 relay (3:53.79). The Kohawks got sixth-place showings from Amanda Brummet in the 60 (8.48) and Amy Hurd in the 800 (2:33.04).

Coe - Women's Track

Bybee excels in pole vault at Coe

Sophomore Laura Bybee knows more about balancing than the average student at Coe College.

Bybee started pole vaulting when she was a freshman at Pecatonica High School in Pecatonica, Ill., and now is on the women’s track and field team at Coe, where she has set records in her favorite event.

“I started out in trampoline and tumbling and they always say that people who are in gymnastics are going to be good at it,” she said.
