Smith ties record as Kohawks sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Brianna Smith tied a school record with 28 kills Saturday as the 25th-ranked Coe volleyball team nipped Saint Benedict, 3-2, at the Northwestern Tournament in St. Paul, Minn.

The Kohawks also beat St. Scholastica, 3-0.

Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 44 assists in the victory over St. Benedict and helped Smith tie the school record for kills. Harbaugh also had 20 digs in the match. Madi Miller had 19 digs, Meghan McClimon had 16 and Ali Arns 15.

Coe and Saint Benedict had a see-saw battle that saw the Kohawks prevail 25-15, 22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-12.

The Kohawks had an easier time against St. Scholastica with a sweep by 25-22, 25-19, 27-25. Smith had 14 kills in that match. Harbaugh had 40 more assists and 17 digs. Arns and Miller had 18 digs.

Coe raised its record to 4-1.

Coe volleyball splits two matches

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Coe volleyball team split two matches Friday at the Northwestern Tournament in St. Paul, Minn.

The 25th-ranked Kohawks lost to 20th-ranked Augsburg, 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, in their first match. The Kohawks defeated Northwestern (Minn.), 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 28-26, in their second contest.

Olivia Leisinger and Brianna Smith led Coe with nine kills against Augsburg. Meghan McClimon had eight kills. Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 29 assists and 14 digs.

Smith paced the Kohawks against Northwestern with 14 kills and Leisinger had 13 kills. Harbaugh rolled up 45 assists. Madi Miller had 22 digs and Ali Arns had 18 digs.

The split left Coe with a 2-1 record.

Coe volleyball team spikes Augustana

The Coe volleyball team used a balanced attack Tuesday night to top Augustana, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, in the season opener for both squads at Eby Fieldhouse.

Brianna Smith led the Kohawks with 16 kills. Lauren Himan collected 15 kill shots and Mackenzie Harbaugh had 13.

Harbaugh also contributed 42 assists and 14 digs. Ali Arns had 16 digs for Coe.

Harbaugh, Schaefer named All-Americans

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The AVCA announced its NCAA Division III All-American teams this week with Coe junior Mackenzie Harbaugh and senior Rachel Schaefer honored as the first all-Americans in school history.

Harbaugh was named to the third team and Schaefer was an honorable mention selection. Harbaugh was also the only Iowa Conference player named to the first, second or third teams.

Harbaugh finished the season with 81 service aces, the most by any Kohawk in a single season. She finished fourth in single-season attack percentage at .351, fourth in assists with 1,339, fifth in assists per set with 10.22, fifth in service aces per set with .62, tied for ninth in sets played with 131 and tied for third in matches played with 38.

Harbaugh is the career leader in attack percentage at .306 and is ranked fourth in assists with 2,588, fifth in assists per set with 7.01, sixth in service aces with 143 and fourth in service aces per set with .39.

3 Coe volleyball players honored

Coe volleyball players Rachel Schaefer and Mackenzie Harbaugh have been named to the All-Central Region first team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Schaefer, a senior, broke the school record for kills in a career. Harbaugh, a junior, set the single-season record at Coe this year for most aces. Both players contributed to the Kohawks in many other ways as well.

Coe junior Brianna Smith has been named to the Academic All-District team by CoSIDA.

The Kohawks finished with a 29-9 record this season. They won the Iowa Conference titles and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
