Mount Mercy - Men's Track

Nickelson takes 2nd in triple jump

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy placed second in the triple jump at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis Friday.

Nickelson, a junior from Nipomo, Calif., was measured at 13.87 meters.

Day 2 of the track meet is Saturday.

Andersen takes 5th for Mustangs

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Mount Mercy senior Jon Andersen placed fifth in the  3000 meter race walk at the NAIA indoor national track championships  Friday.

Andersen, a Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad, finished the event in 13  minutes, 35.5 seconds to score four points for the Mustangs.

The third and final day of the tournament will be held Saturday.

Mustangs win 3 track events

WAVERLY - The Mount Mercy track teams captured three events at the Wartburg Open Saturday in Waverly.

Kathryn Vander Poel won the women's 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 17.60 seconds. Vander Poel also anchored the 4x800 relay to victory in 9:42.78 with Andrea Ertz, Vanessa Cortes and McKenna Johnson.

Luke Nickelson won the triple jump for the Mount Mercy men's track team at 44 feet, 1/2 inch. Nickelson also placed second in the long jump at 21 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

James Lindstrom finished third in the mile in 4:22.19 and Emily Erickson placed third in the 3,000 in 11:27.92.

Vander Poel wins 600 for Mustangs

CRETE, Neb. - Kathryn Vander Poel of Mount Mercy captured the 600 meter run at the Heart of America Conference indoor track meet Saturday.

Vander Poel won the race in 1 minute, 38.32 seconds. She also finished second in the 800 meter run (2:21.55) and helped the Mustangs place second in the distance medley (13:21.19) with Kelsi Huhndorf, Mady Roth and Andrea Ertz.

Vanessa Cortes finished second in the 3,000 meter run (10:54.18) and Ertz placed third in the 1,000 meter run (3:10.30).

The Mount Mercy women finished in fourth place out of 11 teams in the standings.

Mount Mercy - Men's Track

Cortes wins 5,000 at Heart indoor meet

CRETE, Neb. - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy captured the 5,000 meter-run at the Heart of America Conference indoor track meet Friday.

Cortes won the race in 18 minutes, 44.46 seconds on the opening day of  the two-day meet.

Rachel Gadient of Mount Mercy finished second in the women's  pentathlon. The Mustangs also placed second in the 4x800 relay in  9:48.17 with Kathryn Vander Poel, Mady Roth, McKenna Johnson and  Andrea Ertz sharing the baton.

The Mount Mercy women are in second place in the team standings after  three events, with the bulk of the meet scheduled for Saturday.
