Cortes wins 5,000 at Heart indoor meet

CRETE, Neb. - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy captured the 5,000 meter-run at the Heart of America Conference indoor track meet Friday.

Cortes won the race in 18 minutes, 44.46 seconds on the opening day of  the two-day meet.

Rachel Gadient of Mount Mercy finished second in the women's  pentathlon. The Mustangs also placed second in the 4x800 relay in  9:48.17 with Kathryn Vander Poel, Mady Roth, McKenna Johnson and  Andrea Ertz sharing the baton.

The Mount Mercy women are in second place in the team standings after  three events, with the bulk of the meet scheduled for Saturday.

Nickelson wins twice for Mustangs

DECORAH - Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy won two events at the Luther Alumni indoor track meet in Decorah Saturday.

Nickelson, from Nipomo, Calif., captured the long jump (6.59 meters) and the triple jump (13.44 meters) for the Mustangs.

Michael Marshall placed second in the 1,000 meter run (2:39.62). Rafael Passanha finished third in the 200 meter dash (23.97), Josh Long was third in the 800 (2:07.36) and the Mustangs took third in the 4x200 relay (1:40.24).

Kathryn Vander Poel of Mount Mercy claimed the women's 1,000 meter run (3:00.98) in a tight race with teammate Andrea Ertz, who finished second in 3:01.13.

Mustang track teams win 4 events

DAVENPORT - The Mount Mercy indoor track teams won four events at the Fighting Bee Invitational in Davenport Saturday.

Colton Forster captured the 5,000 meter run (15:18.61) and Jon Anderson took the 3,000 meter walk (13:56.02) for the Mount Mercy men.

Kathryn Vander Poel won the 800 meter run (2:21.79) and Rachel Gadient claimed the pentathlon (3,170 points) for the Mount Mercy women.

The Mount Mercy men finished fifth out of 12 teams. Cameron Steffens  placed second in the 1,000 meter run (2:47.67) and the 4x800 relay  team placed second (8:14.94) with Jacob Blackmon, Forster, Aaron Golding and James Lindstrom. Lindstrom finished fourth in the 5,000  (15:23.59).

Kohawks, Mustangs shine at Wartburg

WAVERLY – The Coe men's track team won four events and the Mount Mercy women won two at the Wartburg Indoor Invitational on Saturday at Hoover Field House.

Robbie Peters and Alex Crow-McKee placed first and second in the shot put for the Coe men with throws of 14.57 and 13.86 meters, respectively. Ben Nelson won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 57.91 seconds, Chris Hawkins won the 60 hurdles in 8.69 seconds, and the team of Erik Franklin, Anton Jones, Max Johnson and Demetrius Harper won the 4x200 in 1:33.58.

Colton Forster was second in the 3,000 for the Mount Mercy men in 8:54.23, and the Mustangs placed third in the 4x200 in 1:35.59.

Molly Pruett won the 3,000 for the Mount Mercy women in 10:55.12, and the 4x200 relay team of Receva Duos, Aminah Baloch, Ashli O’Shea and Raeshonda Chandler won in 1:49.73.

Laura Bybee and Christina Brown took first and second place in the pole vault for the Coe women with leaps of 3.12 and 2.97 meters, respectively. Bri’anna Branch took second in the 60 in 8.04.

Mustangs win 4 titles at Dutch Classic

PELLA - Track athletes from Mount Mercy University captured four individual titles at the Dutch Classic in Pella this weekend.

James Lindstrom won the 3000 meter run in 9:12.25 and Gustavo Caballero took the triple jump at 42 feet, 5 1/4 inches to lead the Mount Mercy men's team.

Dana Ewan claimed the 1000 meter run in 11:09.13 and Nicole Sanborn won the triple jump at 32 feet, 5 1/2 inches for the Mount Mercy women.

The Mount Mercy women finished second in the team standings in a tight race. Grand View won the title in the 12-team meet with 113 points, followed closely by Mount Mercy (109) and Central (108).

The Mount Mercy men placed sixth out of 11 schools with 60 points. Central won the title with 131 points.

The Mount Mercy women got second-place showings from Bri'anna Branch in the 200 (27.20), Raeshonda Chandler in the high jump (4-10 1/4) and Aminah Baloch in the long jump (15-11). Mount Mercy received third-place performances from Allison Scott in the 1000 (3:12.33), Molly Pruett in the 3000 (11:27.93), Sanborn in the long jump (15-10 1/2) and the 4x400 relay.

Lindstrom placed third in the mile for the Mount Mercy men (4:24.74) and Evan Bowman was third in the 3000 (9:19.91).
