Cortes wins twice for Mount Mercy

FAYETTE, Mo. - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy was the undisputed queen  of the distance races at the Heart of America Conference track meet  this weekend.

Cortes captured the 10,000 meter run on Friday and claimed the 5,000-meter race on Saturday in 18 minutes, 39.08 seconds.

Cortes helped the Mustangs finish fourth out of 12 teams in the standings.

Jasmine Wardell of Mount Mercy won the shot put (13.01 meters) and  Kathryn Vander Poel claimed the 1500 (4:46.21). Vander Poel also  finished second in the 800 (2:19.37). Andrea Ertz placed third in the  1500 (4:54.35) and Alexa Zamora was third in the 5000 (19:19.08).

Colton Forster won the 10,000 meter run in 31:54.27 for the Mount  Mercy men's track team. Jon Anderson, James Lindstrom and Forster also  collected second-place showings.

Mount Mercy - Women's Track

Cortes wins 10,000 for Mount Mercy

FAYETTE, Mo. - Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy captured the 10,000 meter  run at the Heart of America Conference track meet Friday.

Cortes was clocked in 38 minutes, 56.67 seconds. She dominated the  race and won by 29.05 seconds.

The Mustangs placed second in the women's 4x800 relay in 9:38.58.  Kathryn Vander Poel, Andrea Ertz, McKenna Johnson and Mady Roth shared  the baton.

Mount Mercy - Women's Track

Mustangs win 5 events in track

DUBUQUE - Rachel Gadient played a big role in three victories for the  Mount Mercy women's track team at the Good Friday Invitational in  Dubuque.

Gadient captured the high jump and long jump for the Mustangs. She  also ran the first leg on the triumphant 4x400 relay with Kathryn  Vander Poel, Andrea Ertz and McKenna Johnson.

Vander Poel won the 800 meter run and Johnson prevailed in the 1500.

The Mount Mercy men's and women's teams finished third out of eight  teams in the standings.

Mount Mercy - Women's Track

Vander Poel, Nickelson star for Mustangs

Kathryn Vander Poel and Luke Nickelson were double-champions for Mount Mercy at the Mustang Open track meet Saturday at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

Vander Poel captured the 800 and 1500 meter runs for Mount Mercy. Nickelson claimed the high jump and long jump for the Mustangs.

Vanessa Cortes won the 5000 meter run, McKenna Johnson took the 3000 meter steeplechase and Jon Anderson won the 5000 meter walk.

The Mount Mercy women's track team finished a tight second in the team standings behind Gustavus Adolphus, 114 to 107. The Mount Mercy men placed fourth. Fourteen teams competed in both divisions.

Mount Mercy - Women's Track

Mustangs win 7 events at Wartburg

WAVERLY - The Mount Mercy men's and women's track teams won seven titles at the Wartburg Outdoor Select meet in Waverly Saturday.

Connor Christopherson captured the 400 meter dash (49.97), Colton Forster took the 5000 meter run (16:56.82) and Luke Nickelson won the long jump (21-8 1/4) for the men's team.

Kathryn Vander Poel claimed the 800 (2:19.40), Vanessa Cortes won the 5000 (18:52.80), McKenna Johnson won the 3000 steeplechase (12:04.49) and Rachel Gadient prevailed in the heptathlon (4,335 points).

Nicholson finished second in the triple jump (45-2 1/2). Sophie Feahn took second in the 100 (13.09). Jasmine Wardell was second in the shot put (39-10 1/2).

Wartburg won the men's and women's team championships. Mount Mercy finished fourth out of six teams in both divisions.
