I.C. West upsets 6th-ranked Jefferson

IOWA CITY – Cedar Rapids Jefferson entered Friday night's clash against Iowa City West as the sixth-ranked team in Class 4A in the state.  It also came into the game having won five out of seven, including three in a row.

That impressive streak ended as Jefferson lost to Iowa City West, 59-45, with the J-Hawks playing catch-up for almost the entire game.

Jefferson Coach Stuart Ordman said the game was decided within the first five minutes of tip-off.

“We came out lackadaisical and casual, and they definitely took it to us,” he said.

Jarrod Uthoff, the state’s leading scorer, led the J-Hawks with a hard-earned 28 points and 11 rebounds, and also was a perfect 10-10 at the charity stripe.

J-Hawks net special win in 2 OTs

The heroes for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson basketball team posed for a picture Friday night after the J-Hawks topped Washington, 58-50, in double-overtime.

There was Jarrod Uthoff, who joined Jefferson's 1,000-point club with another big outing. There was Tyler Meiborg, who played a key role for the J-Hawks with his scoring and leadership. And there was 6-year-old Max Meiborg, Tyler's nephew, who is a cancer survivor and a courageous young boy.

Max was one of the honorary ballboys for this special Coaches vs. Cancer affair, and he was extremely proud of his uncle and Uthoff after Jefferson's victory.

The feelings were mutual.

"He smiled at me. That's nice to see," said Tyler Meiborg, who scored 13 points and assumed point-guard duties for the sixth-ranked J-Hawks with Taylor Olson injured.

J-Hawks hold on for win at Wahlert

DUBUQUE -- After a scorching start, Jefferson needed free throws late in the fourth to hold off Dubuque Wahlert, 64-56, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game.

With the win, the No. 6 J-Hawks keep pace with No. 3 Cedar Falls for the top seed in Substate No. 3 with two games remaining in the all important games 5-15. Jefferson’s record improves to 11-2, 7-2 in the MVC. With the loss Wahlert drops to 9-4 and 6-3 in the MVC.

The game featured two of the MVC’s best shooters in Jarrod Uthoff for the J-Hawks and Aaron Schueller from Wahlert. Those in attendance didn’t have to wait long to see each showcase their talent. In the opening half Uthoff shot 9-of-12 from the field, totaling 18 points. Schueller on the other hand was 7-of-10 with four 3-pointers for 18.

Wahlert scored off the jump ball to start the game. Jefferson responded with 19 unanswered points.

Saints don't have a prayer against J-Hawks

On paper, anyway, their seasons are going in the opposite  directions.

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson boys are 10-2 (6-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference) and ranked eight in the state. Xavier is 2-10 (2-6 in the  MVC) and nowhere in the polls.

On Friday night in the Saints gym, however, both teams shot the lights out and fought tooth-and-nail on defense  from start to finish. In the end, though, Xavier could hardly help but foul and Jefferson could hardly miss free throws.

Hitting 28 of 30 from the line, the J-Hawks prevailed 78-67 after building up a 22-point lead in the third quarter.
